Ok so how do I find the file size of an image i.e. the mb -- I know it is there when you go to 'save for web' but is there not an option that allows you to see it on desktop or somewhere as you are working/cropping (like in iphoto for mac users)?
thx you!!

In Windows Explorer you can right-click on the file and select Properties.

Use the image browser feature in PS, click on the image, read the data in the preview window lower left.
