Sorry for my ignorance, but whats the perpose of this filter?

just a heads up, I looked up "Cokin holder and filters" on ebay and found a few that were not too expensive, its something I am now interested in also. Thanks for the info guys.

The filter is clear on one end and darker on the other. The main purpose is to darken the top part of an image, usually the sky, so that the readings between the top (sky) and bottom (ground) are closer together. With the tones being closer together it means you can expose for both instead of exposing for the ground and getting an overexposed sky or exposing for the sky and getting a dark ground. It is also useful for getting longer shutter speeds in bright sky conditions like during a sunset/sunrise. |
