I am looking at creating some prints and I am looking at the available frame sizes per aspect ratio. While cropping some pictures I wondered why there are different aspect ratios, some common frame sizes being 4x6(1.50:1), 16x20(1.25:1) & 8x10(1.25:1) while my camera shoots at 1.333:1. So the final picture is going to look different and can affect the intended "look" of the photo. I looked into camera aspect ratios futher and found out my Canon S500 and Canon G6 both have 1.333:1 aspect ratio and the Canon DSLR's have 1.5:1. Why do DSLRs have a different aspect ratio than regular digitals? What are the pros and cons if any? How does one handle all the different types of aspect ratios available when shooting photos? Are certain aspect ratios better for a different type of photography vs other types of photography?

In general I use the full frame when taking photos - for 4x6, 8x12 etc. If I am specifically shooting for an 8x10 then I include enough negative space or any other elements that can be cropped later.

I don't think one aspect ratio is better than another. It all depends on the composition as to what looks best to the photographer.

i do sports photo and have to crop most of my photos. Michaels stores have a proportional scaler, like an old slide rule, but this one is round. For 8x10 prints, set the 10 over the 8 and you have all the combinations you can set your cropping to. After cropping all you have to do is resize. You can also do this a ratio and proportion formula of 8 over 10 equals x over either height or width.

You could read all about it at this link:
