Thanks to everyone for voting my
to third place.
What I like even more than my ribbon is all the feedback and comments I received.
The majority of the people who commented said that I should have cropped it tighter.
As soon as I received the first comment stating that, I realized that they were right.
This has happened in most of my challenge entries (constructive criticism being received).
I kicked myself for a while and then I moved on and filed it away in with the rest of the knowledge that I've accumulated here at DPC.
As I was editing the picture, I just cropped off the bottom of the photo as there was stuff there that I didn't want.
I didn't give much thought to the rest of the picture.
Now, the next photo I enter, I will be sure to make sure the cropping is to my liking.
Every day and every challenge I learn something new which (I believe) makes me a better photographer.
Again, thanks for the votes and more importantly, thanks for your help and advise. |

I absolutely LOVE that photo!
Btw...... only 9 of the 36 comments are in favor of a tighter crop.
I think its great the way it is (apart from that dreary sky). |

I went out on Christmas morning and took the photo.
It was freezing!
Not a lot I could do about the sky :-)
I guess the tighter crop comments just stood out in my mind and I "saw" more than there actually were.
And as everyone else seems to do it, I think I'll post my alternatives :-)

Not one of those alternatives is even close to the purity of the ribbon-winning image. Ask yourself why. Ask yourself what you DID with your image that made it so effective.

Congratulation on your yellow!
I like it the way it is. I don't think you should have cropped it tighter! I like the space around the somehow dramatic scene. For me it adds some dynamics to the picture. I am curious to know what will happen next: will the seagull get closer? will it fly away? with the space around - everything is possible!
There is a little bit of grain in the sky that is not flattering but it is not distructing.
I like the somewhat dull sky. If there were more clouds in them, then the eye would have too much action to catch, and would miss the drama at the bottom part :-)

Well, I was torn between the third image (two faces) and the one I submitted.
I personally prefer the interaction of the two "faces", but I had a mental arguement with myself.
I thought the one I submitted would be more DPC friendly, but I also believe that you should submit what you personally like and not what the masses want (please yourself and not others).
And then I thought "well, I already have the picture I like backed up on my computer, why not get some update addiction going again?"
Thus I submitted that one.
Thanks for everyones opinions.
My only worry now, is that I'm going to miss out on the one ribbon challenge!!!!! |
