Yeah I hope so... that was disappointing - everyone forgot to put it in their diaries...

SO WHERE DO PEOPLE FANCY GOING?

First time we went to the Eye and around that area...
Second time we "did" Greenwich...

This time?

What kind of pictures do we want to take?

Camden Market is good for people candids and colour and buzz.
Some other places are probably good for modern architecture and others for old...

What kind of stuff do people want to take?

And what about food? We did Chinese in China Town the first time and a pub lunch in Greenwich the second time...

Last time, I suggested hopping on boats down the Thames, and taking photos of everything down the Thames, including the Eye and Greenwich (which is lacking from my portfolio at the moment!), but also Hampton Court, Richmond, Kew, etc.

I have very little of anywhere in London, its rare for me to get down there with a camera. I'd be happy with anywhere really, just need someone to show me where to point the camera ;-)

I'll probably catch the train down from Doncaster so I'll be arriving at Kings Cross, but its simple to get to just about anywhere from that point.

The only thing I would ask is that we decide fairly soon and decide on timings so I am able to purchase a saver ticket which specifies the actual train time I can catch. We need to ensure that wherever we go its fairly certain that we can stick to the times or be able to cut short if we are running late. Trips on boats are going to be potentially tropublesome in this respect.

Well, I don't really mind where we end up going, as long as there's something interesting to shoot :o) Along the river is always good, and I've not done the parts west of Westminster in ages. If we're going to be doing this late into the day (ie until or after sunset), then any of the major monuments are great at dusk / at night (as long as you've got a tripod) since they're lit up.

Hmm... where else... I guess we could wander around the city (moorgate area) if anyone wants to shoot the gerkin or the lloyds building etc, and any of the major squares (trafalgar, leicester, etc etc) or the parks (if the weather is good) will be rammed with tourists and shoppers, which are always good for candids. But hey, anywhere's good :o)

Oh, and FYI, the circle line and zone 1 district line aren't running that weekend (I think), so some places might be harder to get to than others.

I think the city has most to offer for those nmot accustomed to London. I used to live in Central London so i am not fussed but it would help those coming from afar who don't want to waste much of the day on London Transport)

Covent garden is a nice place to get to from the north running trains, and from there one can walk to Leicester Sq, down to Buk Palace, then to West Minister & Number 10, then to the river, the eye, Tate Modern, Tower Bridge, Tower of London, St Katherine's Docks (good pub) up to the Gherkin and then back to Kings Cross.

Just an idea?

I'm not really up for the city, which becomes like a ghost town on the weekends... but your second paragraph is quite a comprehensive tour which I'd be up for if no-one likes my boat idea. I've been dying to shoot in Covent Garden for ages, and I can enjoy a pint in some of my old hunting grounds!

Sorry Bob, I didn't mean City as in the City part of London (as in business and finance areas such as bank) I meant the main tourist areas, central London for want of a better word.

Although I think Bank etc have their merits when it's ghostly, as this makes for a lost sole type of photography in the city, although pretty boring for most I agree :D

I am OK for a boat, although with tourists and moist windows shooting can be a bit tricky.

Being by the river at night also has it's merits.

I'd second the problems in the City, unless you want to capture that kind of 28 Days Later kind of feel... it would make eating and drinking difficult though, with everywhere shut.

The walk proposed above seems huge! however, starting off in covent garden sounds nice. it's surrounded by nice streets and is walking distance (for unfit people like me) from trafalgar square (very nice since it's semi-pedestrianisation), St Martins in the field, laicester sq, piccaddilly circus and the embankment.

Other areas i quite like include:

Docklands, which (weather being obligingly nice) would be a good start off for the boat trip to westminster. if it's windy / rainly, you could get the tube instead from the second best underground station (canary wharf), to the best (westminster). docklands itself has some very nice modern buildings, some dingy crappy buildings, is nicely busy at the weekend (good candids!) with good restuarants, (big wagamama, for instance), a free underground car park for those who are driving, nice visual details generally such as sculpture, toy trains (well, the DLR) lots of water and bridges...

When you did the eye etc, how far did you wander? did you get to the east end of the south bank, including festival hall, oxo building, borough market, southwark cathedral, london bridge, the Belfast, mayors building, butlers wharf, tower bridge, tower of london, minories car park (contender for ugliest london building) and katherines dock with the aforementioned nice pub, the Dickens Inn (sells wonderful wonderful pizza).

must say, i am looking forward to the field trip with you other photographers - will be an entirely new experience for me :) i should definitely be going; though there is the risk that i might be made to go to Cork in Ireland this weekend due to my other half's work commitments. but it's undecided so as of the now, i'll definitely be there. which reminds me, are other partners normally dragged along to these kind of things, or is it bad form to bring their significant other (even if they're only equipped with, say, a camera phone)?

ah, you meant the West End. Sorry, i thought you meant the City also. yes, your suggestion is a good one, as there is plenty to see and do. you don't even need any real direction in mind - stuff just comes up to you as you wander aimlessly around. there is also a great irish pub just off soho which is quite cavernous and has a tree inside. great murphys as well. Actually, come to think of it, a great on-a-budget resutarant is up the road in Soho (Wardour Street I think) called Satsuma - has nice big long tables, great japanese food (catering for all tastes) and should be pretty good for a big meet.

I like the river idea to be quite hones, will give us different perspective of taking photographs, but I am up for anywhere really...not fussy :)

........As for the West Country, lovely place in its own right. I go there quite a bit, where do you live in Glos?

10 miles South of Gloucester.
20 Miles North of Bristol.

1 mile from the Severn, on a hill (fortunately) as when it floods, things do get rather wet

Anywhere near Cirencester?
(Edited for number accuracy and spellllings)

Woo west country! :P

I've talked to me girlfriend and she's happy to come along with me so that part is great, but the trains are just way too expensive for us poor students :(

Ben, how much is the cheapest fare you can find that would work?

I like the idea of the river too - I think it would be a bit different for sure.

We did traipse through Covent Garden on the first GTG BUT I'm certainly happy to wonder around the West End again as I think there is so much to see and photograph and I'd like another go at some of that.

Satsuma is a nice restaurant but it's somewhat Wagamama style and I don't think they take bookings which would make it near impossible to get a table for so many people if we just turn up.

We could resort to my favourite China Town hang out again (good location, not expensive) or if people don't like chinese how about Brown's which is kind of bistro/ pub kind of place on St Martin's Lane and does take bookings for larger groups and is also very close to Covent Garden and West End in general?

I'd suggest we actually meet at the lunch venue and go photographing after that?

This is gonna be cool!

I'm with you on the group photo - that would be nice...
I don't like beer - can I have a couple of Bailey's on ice instead?
01/10/2005 11:39:49 AM · #120
Beer, baileys, heck any booze will do ;o)

oh dear. once a little merry, i have a tendency for forgetting things such as woolly hat, scarf, glove, home address... i think i am going to thread my camera strap through my sleeves mittens-on-a-string style, because i'd be in heaps of trouble if i leave that behind...

I think that goes for all of us so I'm aiming for nothing more than tiddly rather than seriously merry or worse!

Maybe it's me, but it took me ages to realise you were talking about the soft drink!

Ben, you're old enough to drink, just as long as you're not buying - I'm sure everyone will buy you a round ;o)
