Didn't get a shot in for CandidII and i'm feeling bad about it....
i feel like maybe i chickened out since it shows raw photog. skills...
so here's my excuss
_I got yelled at_(lame huh...)-
in coffee shops = 10times
just by ppl. out side =4
ppl. walking=2
biking=1
a cop warning=1(appearntly they don't like to have there shots taken unless u ask[i kind-of knew that but shhhh...) he was nice though.
And i didn't get a shot, or at least 1 i liked, oh well i gess it was time to take a break anyway this is the frist time since i started participating on this site that i did not submit a shot (note:before i was a member i submitted just to open or what i could)
so this breaks the streak
Good luck to all who got a shot in, u have my respect on this 1.

You got yelled at all those times?
This hasn't been my experience at all...I truly wish you better fortune on future expeditions! |

Hehehe... sorry to hear your tale of woe. I had all sorts of trouble taking a shot for this challenge - went out on like 3 specific expeditions - and came back empty handed.
Finally got a great shot when I was least expecting it (the essence of a candid I guess)... and now I will have the pleasure of watching it get pummelled in voting :). |

If you got yelled at that many times, you need a longer lens!
Err..sorry...a DSLR with a longer lens. ;-)

How close were you? Candids are easier with a long lens or a good zoom on a digicam. Having a smaller cam helps too. I shot with my new Canon S1 IS so I could be more discrete. It also helps that it has the equivalent of a 360mm lens. I used the full telephoto range for my shots.
I have to say, for anyone who wants to shoot candids, that having a swivel LCD is also great. Which is one major reason why I bought the S1 rather than the Panasonic Z3 which I "really wanted" for it's lens. You can walk around, with your camera "down", and shoot. This is how we used to do it when I was in high school and we had twin lens reflex cameras, which you wore around your neck and looked down! |

I just came back from New York, but not in time to enter the challenge. There you not only don't get yelled at, but people on sidewalks a block from times square actually stop to let you make the shot. I heard about New Yorkers' respect for fotographers, but have never actually seen it... |

fotodude: too bad about all the yellings.. i guess maybe your zoom isn't quite strong enough for those true candids :p (or were you trying some macro candids? haha, jk) - however, i'm not so sure that release forms would ease anyone's mind.. if they're worried about you taking their picture, they'll be even more worried if they get the impression that you're gonna be printing/posting it to the point that you actually need a release form.
nshap: that's one thing i wish i could do with the rebel.. i know, too much to ask - but, a guy can always wish. i could do that with my old f717 and it was great not only for 'sneaking' shots, but for when i wanted to get some ground level shots without laying belly-down on the ground.

I had a few odd looks, but not a single word spoken to me about taking the candids. But I was in a wide open nature scene though, not in any closer in areas. I did use my full zoom though (5x) to capture the shot I entered.

I was using my full zoom, 300mm which is 480 with 1.6x crop in my camera and I still had to crop and I am only using about 20% of the area so you know how far I was, just to avoid any looks :D |

your prob. right about the forms i just thought (seeing as how i'm only 16) i would help to calm ppl. down more than just "its for a school news paper"(my usual lie[if i get into trouble]).
i'm not sure why of all the times that i go looking for candids i got yelled at the most this past week but i think it could have something to do with the fact that ppl. where drunk over new years.
anyway just to let u all know the shot i was trying for was a pick of some1 through the steam of coffee from the edge of the cup or a shot of some1 throught the destorted prospective of a glass(shooting through the glass).
when those didn't work out in a candid situation i didn't want to stage anything(thought it would be cheep) so i went for other shots and got yelled at.
hasn't stoped me yet it never will.

You could buy a Right Angle lens and not have to worry too much :P

those two shots sounds like you need to be pretty darn close to pull them off effectively.. maybe tough to do for a candid. i hear that people are often understanding if you approach them in the appropriate manner to _ask_ for a shot (although that's obviously not suitable to a candid) - but i've never tried it myself.
wow, never knew that they made such a thing faidoi.. pretty interesting.. i wonder if anybody gets suspicious after noticing the odd shape though.
