That's from the challenge rules. The rules that were JUST clarified - so this ruleset expresses the intent of the SC and founders. It is their intent that we vote each image on a scale of 1 to 10. Not 1 to 5. Not 2 to 9. That's what confuses me. His scale completely ignores the SITE RULES. Does that make my argument against 2 to 9 any stronger or clearer?

You know if a photo totally sucks, is completely out of focus, and also dones not represent teh challnge, than it deservers a one. There is no way around it, and every challenge has photos like that. This site is not about protecting peoples feelings, its about giving them acurate and truefull feedback. That is the only way we can learn.

With apologies to the founders and to you: the scale is merely a guide. It is not a law that you have to use 1 to 10. Perhaps the founders are more enlightenned than I am, but i have judged many images and I never use 1 to 10. I can only discern 5 categories. We know what the scale is, but each of us devises what we consider the fairest way to judge an image.

To further Dan's argument, I think under most circumstances, those people who are using an abbreviated voting scale are probably not using 1-5 or only 2-6. I'm sure that in the scheme of things, the choices of 2-9 are perfectly acceptable, as they allow for both high and low scoring from an individual, if the restriction was only on the low side or only the high, then it would be unfortunate and seems to me that would be wrong.

As has been said time and time again. The vote of one is usually only a drop in the puddle compared to the rest of the voter pool.
