Why is there a 2 week submission date? I mean usually it's only one, and in a contest where all the photographs must already have been taken, then what the point in having such a long submission date?
Or is this gonna take place instead of the next member challenge?

I would imagine that some people here have thousands of photos to go through so that may be one of the reasons. I myself have taken around approx 12,000 photos in the last 12 months, some will have taken over 50,000.

Yes, I understand that very well, I have only started taking photos and had already trouble selecting the one I considered to be the best to enter for best of 2004 and though about what it is going to be like for the best of 2005 where I will easily have taken more than 3 times as many as in 2004 |

I think its perhaps so that more people will see the challenge and perhaps enter it, since you could listerally enter this challenge in under an hour.
I too thought it was strange though, considering most people will have their best image alraedy edited so they just have to resize. And if they need to re edit, it wouldn't really take that long.
I know people have millions of photos, but I think most of us all know which are our best few of the year. We all have our personal favourites.
I hope people that do have theirs on dpc or in their profile at least presses the 'hide' button though, or remembers to, as I am sure a lot would have been posted somewhere.

My problem is that I don't have a 'best of 2004' photo. They all suck because I had a huge lack of inspiration and a photography depression in 2004. :)

I have a few to choose from that have not already been entered in a challenge but have already been seen by many due to outtakes/prints etc.
What is the rule on that?

So long as it has not been entered into the challenge and that you have the EXIF data readily available, then it is okay to submit. People will expect to have seen at least some of the images in the challenge so it is okay, you are not the only one in that situation.

No, some are just not interesting enough for dpc and the ones that were I have already used for dpc. :)
Today I have edited one that I might use. I approached the editing way differently than I did when I first put that image up. But compared to 2003 the stuff from 2004 is worse. So therefore I don't have a 2004 favourite.

Just out of curiosity (this doesn't apply to me 'cuz I'm new here): the rules say you can't enter an image that has already been a challenge entry. What about an outtake of a shot that has already been a challenge entry? Is this a potential gray area?

You can. It may not be the same exposure as a challenge entry.
Be aware though, that if voters remember the original challenge entry they may not score you well. Also this could draw DQ requests so you may end up having to submit one or both originals.

You can enter anything as long as it is a different exposure (file) from one you have entered before.
For example this is illegal:
IMG_0001.jpg - In color, entered into Nude II Challenge.
IMG_0001.jpg - Edited to B&W, entered into Best of 2004.
Whereas this is legal:
IMG_0001.jpg - In color, entered into Nude II Challenge.
IMG_0006.jpg - Edited to B&W, entered into Best of 2004.
Even if the photos look pretty much the same. Expect to have to prove the exposures are different though. Also expect lots of low votes from people who think it's the same photo.

Hey, as long as some are submitted, I don't care whether they win or not ;)
