I was wondering if there is any software available that would allow me to get statistics from EXIF info from a large number of files simultaneously. The reason I ask is that I'm trying to figure out from my pictures from last year what focal lengths I use in different situations, to decide on the lenses to get when I upgrade to a dSLR. I know the info is there, I just don't feel like looking it up and typing it into excel for thousands of pictures. Suggestions anyone?

Nicole,
I hope someone has a better answer than I do. I found only one possible solution and it's only a partial one. This freeware program will allow you inspect the EXIF data for all files i a directory and sort on some EXIF fields. Sorting on focal length would enable you to simply count up the results. Looks like you'd have to go one directory at a time, though, which could be tedious.
Disclaimer: I have not installed the referenced software, just looked over the page referenced.

jHead would be the obvious candidate - as long as you don't mind getting your hands dirty with the command line.
Exif-o-matic looks a bit more user friendly, but I don't know how good it is.

Looks like JHead would do what I'm looking for. I'm also looking at EXIF-viewer, which creates an excel-file from all pictures in a (sub-)directory.

Thanks for the input!

By accident I discovered that iView MediaPro will do this. It reads all EXIF-data, which you can then export to a tab- or comma-separated file. When you're not looking anymore, the solution will present itself...

As an aside, I discovered that BreezeBrowser also lets you export EXIF from multiple files to a single text file in a delimited format. You can specify comma, semicolon, tab, or a few other delimiters. There's also an option for a custom format string, I have not looked into this at all.
