I'd like the opinions of people who have used both the DSC-f717 and the the DSC-f828.
Is it worth upgrading? Besides the 8 mp capability, do the 4 color filter and propietory RAW files make the difference worthwhile?
Thanks in advance. |

I can say for me the upgrade was a definite plus. I̢۪ve gotten two ribbons with the 828 that I know I couldn̢۪t have with the 717. The extra pixels and the ability to crop and still have a very good photo is what did the trick plus the extra zoom. I̢۪m not sure if the 4 color filter ability is a plus. I̢۪ve found there is a problem with overexposed greens especially with stop lights that when green look very wrong. The color is bright cyan not green. There seems to me to be almost no halos around wires and such with the 828 at 8 meg which helps when sharpening and there is less sharpening halo effects. Raw is absolutely fantastic only if you have to get shots off real quick you can forget it. It takes way to long between exposures. I̢۪ve also found if you take 10 pictures with the 717 you̢۪ll probably take 100 with the 828. It is so damn easy to press that little button and the speed of focus with the zoom being mechanical makes all the difference.
I love the 828 and it is without a doubt a great camera. It does almost everything I want. I̢۪m not such a photographer that I need what a professional would. I can only say I̢۪m keeping mine and also I̢۪m keeping the 717 I have.
I̢۪ll admit I would buy it. Now. I like wining Ribbons. That̢۪s only because I can̢۪t afford a 20D with all the lenses I̢۪d need.
That̢۪s me advice. John

although i didn't have the 828, i did have the 717 and know that it was a great camera. i now own a dSLR, which i love.. but at the same time, i can recognize the 717 for its great quality and versatility as an all-in-one camera. (i know this isn't what you asked, but just throwing in some blibbity-blab)

Thanks to both of you for responding.
I thoroughly enjoy the 717, which does pretty much everything I ask of it, but have been considering the 828. You've given me something to think about. |
