A stunning collection of images from this year: Reuters Pictures
About 1/2 way down is the Pictures of the Year 2004, (open in a java slideshow window) and many/most are simply amazing!

Simply amazing is right. While there are many photos that I admire and know I could not duplicate, these take it to a whole other level. Not only are they technically perfect and emotionally powerful, but they were often created 'in the moment', without much time to compose and fiddle with their settings like I often have to do. From what I understand, their post-processing is often much less than we are used to (unless I heard wrong), because they try to uphold a level of 'journalistic integrity'. Excellent link.
