This may seem like a simple question but which Speedlite is best for me? I want it to have reach for nature photography. Does the 800 really have that much more reach than the 600?

Yes
Plus it can be used w/ a 600 as a commander, and it has the difuser

FYI, the D70 itself can be used as the commander, so the SB800 is not needed to control the remote units.
If you plan on using multiple Speedlites though, I would suggest going ahead and getting the SB800 as it is a great flash.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like the 800 does have the extra reach I will need. I want it to reach up into trees and deep into bush, mainly for bird pics. The rest of the bells and whistles I'm sure I'll need someday. The diffuser sounds good for portrait work. I just needed some help convincing myself to spend the extra $$.
Thanks again.

One flash, even with diffuser, even if used remotely, will likely not going to be enough for portrait work.
And for the record, SB-600 also has a built-in diffuser.

Thanks Yura. For the most part I'm more interested in the reach issue. If I start to do any portrait work I'll get some more lighting. Thanks for the info though. |

I've just got a 600 - very happy with it :)
My main use initially will be basic (on location) portrait work, the 600 has all the basics that are needed (including a diffuser). I'll use the D70 as commander and the 600 offset, I'm also looking to get a basic cheap flash to use with a lumiquest thingy on the camera itself.
You might want to check this review.

Either way, you will likely need a flash extender for the kind of daytime reach you are looking for. Robin Holden Sr. had at one time some great photos of professional wildlife photographers at a bird sanctuary in the activity of shooting birds. Every one had extenders on their speedlights.
For the record, I have the SB600 and have no complaints. It does all that I need.....however I am not reaching into trees or deep into brush for shots. Also, the Sigma 50-500EX is a sought after lens by "birders". In case you are also looking for glass.

I'm not sure of your money situation, but have you looked at the Mecablitz (aka Metz) flashes? I've had my CT45 for over a decade, and shot weddings with it. Bulkier, yes, but the reach would be excellent, and the automatic setting is dead on.
I can't recommend a model, because I haven't looked at flashes in that long... |
