I wasn't happy with my shot for the Deja Vu challenge. I was way to rushed, couldn't get the lighting right but thought I'd see how the shot faired anyhow. It placed about where I expected. Yesterday, I spent part of the morning retrying the shot. Because I'm home with a nasty head cold I wasn't up to finding red roses so I used the white ones left over from Christmas.
This is the first try:
and this is the second:
Better? Any thoughts on how to improve it? |

I like the second one better for two reasons:
The rose is formed a little better (naturally), the petals in the first shot just go every which way they want. Given the challenge (soft focus) I like the more organized petals.
Again given the Challenge (soft focus), the last color that come to my mind would be red. Red represents anger or chaos to me. The cream color of the second rose gives a more calm soothing feel just right for soft focus.
I think the second would have done better. I think you could have gone a little softer in the center of the second one, it is almost closer to a shallow dof, than a totally soft focused shot.

I prefer the second, the crop isn't as tight and more of the bud of the bloom is visible. It has a softer feel, instead of the harsh red blasting out of the screen. Don't get me wrong, the first shot is fine, but too red!
The angle of the photo is more appealing in the second shot, all in all a much softer, cleaner and delicate photo.
Well done on both! |

i must agree with awpollard. although i liked the image, i took off a point because the petals just seemed to, as he put it, "go every which way they want". if you had given them a more smoothed out appearance, it would have been better.. but i also do really like the cream colored version - it does seem a bit more peaceful.

Thanks for the feedback!
Question: Since the original was red wouldn't I have lost points for not choosing a red rose to photograph? I agree that the white is much more peaceful and does give a softer feel to it. I was worried about making that change. |

this answer will vary from person to person. i personally preferred the images that had a little variation from the original. i'm sure that there were others who were looking for precise angles, colors and everything else to mimic the original.

The challenge specifically suggested "inspired by" as a takeoff point, so I think the white would have been an "inspired" choice. I know I'd have ranked it higher, and I gave the red one a decent score. We actually had a LOT of images that used color shifts fromt he originals, anyhow.
