I tried for hours last challenge to get smoke or mist in my shot, but with no acceptable success. I tried candles, dry ice in water, both together. I even used our theatre department's smoke machine! I could not get good mist.
I wanted it for two reasons: One, I just generally wanted mist in the background to intensify the lighting and to direct the eye to the photo's subject. Two, I thought it would be cool to shoot through the mist and have a shaft of light.
Any experience with this Anyone?

You mean a bit like this :-)

Used a smoke machine for this one.. But I had to shoot this picture in our rather small dining room, all doors/windows shut, and keep your finger on the SMOKE button, the room was FULL of smoke but it worked a treat as you can see :-)
You have to have it the smoke quite thick and ideally use a slow shutter speed to really pick out those shafts of light. Drop me a line if you want any other examples or advice...

David, with this photo //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=11483
I used a Europro steam cleaner. I set the camera timer and 2 seconds before the shutter went off I blasted the steam in the direction of the keyhole. I was actually trying to get more of an effect like Marks but the steam cleaner could be another option |

Those shots are exactly what I was looking for! They are great, and newly added to my Favorites. Thanks for the tip. I just wasn't being enthusiastic enough, it sounds like.
Thanks. Any more ideas would be appreciated, too!
