Whenever i open a new image for editing, photoshop for some reason automatically sets the resolution to 180 PPI, and this creates problems since almost all of my pictures are for display on a computer monitor and so i want 72 PPI as to not have unnecessarily big image files at 180 PPI.

I can simply set the resolution of every image i open back to 72, however that is tedious if i have to do it every time - and i would rather have 72 be the default and then i can go in and change it if i need a higher resolution for printing.

So how, then, would i set 72 PPI as the default resolution?

P.S. i'm using photoshop 7.0 ...

I think this is how you preset it. Not sure but you can try.
Click on Edit > Preferences > General
Click on General at top and scroll down to ‘Units & Rules’.
Under ‘New Document Preset Resolutions’ make sure your ‘Screen Resolution’ is set to 72.
