I`ve just experienced my first taste of the disqualification process with my submission to the "Deja Vu" Challenge.
No complaints..well maybe one, but I`ll come to that later.
The image( a dark parody of David Sidwell`s Waiting for the Elves)had some pinpoints of light showing through the trees, I cloned some out until I was left with the impression of eyes..I then moved a few to areas that I felt needed them for the effect.
This is where my one complaint comes in, I was in doubt as to whether pinpoints of light constituted "major elements" and Pm`d the admin (using "contact us")48hrs in advance of the challenge for advice on the matter..but did not receive an answer.
Still can`t blame anybody except myself, I should have played safe and removed the "offenders".
I`m glad it was in the low sixes score wise!!
I suppose I have the chance to alter it the way I wanted now and stick it in the portfolio.
Thanks to all for the comments and apologies to the two who chose it as a favourite.

I think you reputation as a photographer speaks for itself, Gordon. You tried to check first. Could be worse, you could have been in the mid 8's and got the dq. That would have sucked.
Anyway, congrats on your new DQ!

Should one count one's DQ's?
Hey you, I've been DQ'ed more often than you, you looser! :)

Hmm, this makes me have second thoughts about my entry for HIDDEN FACES. I also have PM'd the Site Council for advice/validation of my entry. So far no response, but of course it being the holiday season I can understand that. I'll be unsubmitting mine if I don't hear from someone soon, will post the before and after here in that case and hope for some feedback. Thanks for the head's up. |

If you've not heard back from one member of the SC or the admins, please feel free to PM me and I'll pass it on to the others (since I tend to keep on top of my email inbox ;o). If it's critical that you get a response ASAP, then it's probably best to PM the entire SC to ensure that one of us will pick up on it.

Ray..I hope yours turns out OK, best of luck
Manic..I`ve got you in my notebook for any future problems :)

Sorry to hear that Gordon. I don't remember your photo, can you post it to your portfolio?
Just for kicks, you might see if you can accomplish the same effect by just changing the colors of some of the leafs. I would think you could get a face effect that way, and it's really not any different than selectively changing colors of smoke to produce an RGB effect, which the site council already ruled on and set a precedent. (Hmmm, it would have been interesting to parady that one...)

I will post it Neil...No leaves on trees in my part of the world at the moment, plus the fact that this was taken in a pine woods where nothing grows on the branches until you reach ceiling height because of the intense darkness...hence the reason for utilising the pinpoints of light
that were showing through.

Whilst I sympathise with the DQ Gordon I can understand the decision.
It is a super shot, looks like a scene out of some spooky film.
The eyes are a major element in forming the impact of the picture and as such, the DQ.
I would like to see the exif on this one if you feel like divulging,
Great work,
Paul.

I understand it also Paul..would have appreciated the verdict coming before the challenge started though, then I could have amended it.
Exif details here..

Perhaps we could have a special challenge where major elements can be manipulated. Gordon's DQed entry is superb!

I'm sorry that you didn't get a response soon enough... I would have to suggest that people wanting to get verification like this ahead of time should send a PM to a few members of Site Council, rather than just picking one person (assuming that's what happened here).
I've been on SC for quite a while, and I can honestly say I can only recall one instance where someone dropped me a note to ask an opinion about the legality of a shot. I'm pretty compulsive about checking e-mail, and I would be glad to respond to inquiries and/or pose them to other members of SC if the opportunity arises... but I obviously can't help if I'm not being contacted. |

Alan, thanks for the response, I don`t want to labour this point as I`m not disputing it in any way.. but to clarify, I sent the query regarding "major elements" to the admin on the Friday evening (my time)before the challenge start date. I used the "Contact us" option, which on reflection may not have been the best choice.
I`ve found out the hard way that should this arise in the future, I will contact as many SC members as possible.
Paul..have a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New year and that greeting goes to all fellow DPC`ers and their families.

Also realize we can only offer our personal opinion on the legality of a shot -- sometimes the vote or whether or not to DQ can be quite split.
Just because I tell you I think a shot "ought" to be OK is no guarantee that it won't be DQ'd. You could really ask the same opinion of any other user familiar with the rules ... |

Yep, understood Paul, and a good a reason for getting as many opinions as possible.
Should there be the slightest doubt,I would have no hesitation in pulling it out of the challenge.
