I missed the deadline for Pets -- I had this shot visualized, but didn't think I'd be able to pull it off via remote control, so I was going to pass. Tonight, I set up the camera and got the bird during NYPD blue, and I got the shots I wanted, but between selecting which shot, and doing the crop, reductions, and sharpening, I missed.

I'd appreciate your opinion on how this would have done, or any constructive comments.

This was my first choice, but I thought the tight crop and the 3-second rule would mean that people would not correctly visualize the position of the bird:

So I was working to crop another, when the deadline passed, and ended here:

Thanks in advance for all comments, especially critical ones!

Regards and Happy Holidays, Neil

I can't be objective on these - I love them too much. Very cool for me.

Neil, I'm sorry you missed the deadline. Based on what I've seen so far I would have given it either an 8 or 9. I like the composition, clarity, and color. That little bird really does love you and you've captured it well. :)

Thanks Kyle, DiAnna, and Bill (commented on the photo)!

Is it waiting for a scratch?

Lovely bird and great shot. Pity you missed the cut off, now I move up 1 place! ;)

Neil, sorry you missed the deadline. I like your shot.

I missed the deadline also. I just wasn't thinking about the time difference for California.

Here is my "entry"
I think it would have average results, but it does portray how "helpful" Zippy is when someone is trying to get some work done.

Thanks everyone.

@Gurilla: I guess so, he likes my scratchy beard! (After I took the shots though, I realized I needed a bit of a cleanup shave.)

@Zippy: I like the shot, though I am mixed about whether it would be better to crop it so the door frame isn't there at such an angle (and the tissue box isn't so prominant.

@Suemack: Thanks for your comments here and on the photo. I take it that's the one I should have submitted (that seems to be consensus at least in terms of people commenting). The irony is that that was the photo that was done in time (even though I numbered it 2 when I uploaded for comment). I just thought people would look at it and see a bird with a deformed, rather than contorted, head!

Good luck to you all on your own entries. I have been leaving a fair number of comments on challenge entries, will do some more tonight, hopefully, I will hit upon yours and leave something helpful.

Regards--Neil

Still a bit bummed I didn't get to enter. Anyone else want to make me feel bad? ;)

Edit: Forgot smiley ...

Technically better than a lot of entries, but still a very cluttered composition. Very centered. A very good snapshot, a 5.

Sorry, Last call--Anyone else have comments on my bird shots? Which should I have entered? (Trying to learn better for next time, when I'm on time.)

Happy Holidays to all--I'll most likely be offline after tomorrow morning until Sunday night or Monday. Another challenge missed...

Image I like...would have scored it a 7.

But forgive my ignorance...

What is the 3 second rule? Thanks!

bump...

Can anyone tell me what the 3 second rule is?

That's presumably how long most people look at an image before voting. If they don't get it in 3 seconds, neither do you ;)
