I will toss in that I really enjoy getting PMs from people either, before, during or after the challenge. Oh wait, you can't get them before. But anyhow, I figure more feedback is better than less.
So, if anyone is feeling the need to PM, let me know:)

i didn't want to be the first to say enjoy. Thanks for that. I like getting PMs about my comments. And you can remain anonymous - I might comment on 20 pics, and then get a PM taht says something like "well.. do you really think that branches can just stand that way.. and leaves as well..." - most of the time i have no clue which of the 20 it is - ( the above is an actral PM from the WIND challenge). I have no way to correlate that PM, recived a day later, to the many tree / leaf pics i saw. I responded to the PM, but without the photog identifying it further (quoting my comment maybe) I have no way to give further feedback until after the challenge...and by then i have usually moved on to other things.
As to showing entries to other DPC'rs. I did that for the first time recently. I hope his advice is good on this one...I have had other DPC'rs refuse this idea flat out. I'd like to have a small group I could submit my pre-entry to for advice on making it better. I can only trust that they have the integrity to vote honestly, and they trust me not to get all fired up if they give me a low score.
I have been here long enough that i can sometimes identify who did the pic while voting...I know I am not the only one!

I've had just one anonymous comment since that thing started - and I hated it; not the comment itself, which was reasonably complimentary I think (as of course the vast majority of comments are), but the fact that I had no idea how much weight to put behind it. I ended up trying to ignore it. Bugged the hell out of me for a bit though.

I think that this kind of sharing before the voting starts is against the spirit of the rules. Specifically the rules that say an entry is supposed to be the work of the person entering it. The place to get the advice on making it better is in the challenge comments and afterwards in the forums.

Why not just a simple mask over a generic face? A paper bag implies that the commentor is embarrassed or shunned for requesting anonymity. I don't think a playful masquerade-type mask would have that problem.

The mask is not for you
its for them.
I would like to have cut out eye holes...... |

The mask looked too much like the SC's dark sunglasses ... if we had bigger icons it might work better. |

Understood, but a big masquerade mask, with a stick and maybe feathers or other decoration, should be distinctive enough. |

I think the bag or whatever was great and really enjoyed seeing who was under it when the challenged finished. |

I agree 100 percent, well said.

I haven't read the whole thread so if I'm repeating sorry.
If you do not wish to get PM's during the challenge and you do not want to have a bag over your head then I suggest you put something in your profile stating that. People have to go to your profile before sending a PM.

funny, Gurilla, how 3 ppl in a row use gibun-like scoring system on you wind entry but come up with 3 totally different scores.
While getting detailed breakdown of score is better than only score and no comment, a more verbose comment is more helpful.
for example:
Appeal: 3 tells me that the commenter didn't find the photo appealing, but if I have no idea why, it does NOT help anybody with improving their photo-appeal.
A little too much work on the sky here, I think...Good placement and silhouette, though. With a sky that didn't look like mold (in a literal sense), this would have received an 8 or 9 give me (or rather Gurilla) much better feedback.
Gurilla's wind-entry (which I like a lot):
see bottom of commenting section
edit: syntax (hehe, not grammar or spelling this time)

Oh no! Now I feel like a terrible hypocrite - I just PM'd someone who commented on one of my entries. The comments were ok, but I felt the commenter missed a point and I got caught up in the moment. At least I didn't whine in my PM, but I probably came across as explaining - just as bad I guess. Feeling a bit remorseful...

dude if you don't want replies to comments, use the wusso bag icon -- problem solved. I've, personally, never PM'd anyone durring voting although I came close this time with a comment for my Movie Titles that said only "Snapshot". Give me a break! If you have nothing constructive to say, then don't say anything. I checked this person's comment history and he's given hundreds of one word comments and has NEVER submitted an entry to a challenge. Needless to say, I'll make my views on his 'comment' to my photo known to him after the challenge is over.

sounds like it came from the same person who left the same one word comment on one of my recent submissions...he gives an average vote of 4.2 and only 50% of his comments are helpful and he has never entered a challenge.
In fact, he has left that one worder 39 times and included "snapshot" in three other derogatory comments. The majority of his comments are one word and negative.
People like that give trolls a bad name. |

At least they left a comment. Overnight I've gone from 6.28 in the movie challenge to this morning's 6.0038. So to all those that gave me a 1 or 2 in the past 12 hours and decided to leave no comment....thank you! |

It didn't have to be votes of ones or twos to bring it down. Anything 6 or below would have made it drop slightly.

The troll voters are getting smarter too I think. I'd say they are varying their low votes instead of giving just 1s to get around the infamous "algorithm". They're like a frikken disease!!

heh...I hear you. My only thing is that if you don't like my submission (which obviously a lot of people dont' -- I'm sitting at 4.7) then tell me why, don't just say "snapshot". This is the only challenge where I had a set place and a set image in my head before I went out shooting -- and I captured it exactly as my mind saw it before I went shooting. So obviously I need some good comments if I stand to improve any.

actually, if your score is above a 6 and someone scores you a 6, it will drop your score...
;-)
whoops, didn't read the whole thing close enough...

Absolutely true, but it happened in only a few votes out of over 200, so I would imagine the score would have to be very low to drop it in only a few, right? It was only in the span of a few hours and a few votes. I don't care, I'm the fool idiot who submitted the wrong version of my photo anyway, I deserve the flogging I get. |
