Is there a good reason why cropping beyond the allowed aspect ratios isn't allowed? I have a submission I'd submit as a square rather than a rectangle. It just looks better this way. I just wanna know if there is a GOOD reason why we can't go beyond the rectangle limitations.

The site was created that way in January in an effort to keep the playing field level -- that is, to keep the emphasis on photography rather than one's ability to creatively crop his photo. That's going to change with the release of the new site features in a month or so, so just hang with it until then.

I'm just trying to emphasize the fact that some subjects are more appealing with a square shape rather than a rectangle shape. The playing field remains level even with square ratios as each subject can be as well represented as possible.
Great to hear that the site will be changing to better accomodate the slight constraints it has now.

Ok, I'm such a butt. I answered my own problem. SORRY!
