I am looking at getting a dSLR sometime in '05 and ther have been some recent thread postings regarding warranties, repairs, etc.
What is the life expectancy of the shutter mechanism(s) in the dSLRs out there now? As in Rebel, D10/20, Nikon D70/100? Anyone have an older D30/60 - how are they holding up?
With film a pro might wear out a camera, but an amature would not. But by my calculations i took about 8,000 shots this year...and I'm just getting started, so to speak.
Is a D20 gonna last longer than a Rebel, and if so is it worth th eadditional cost / wait time to get one? (wait as in saving up $)

| Digital cameras last as long as the next model within your budget for a tradein. I don't think anyone is going to run around proud with ancient technology. |

I would buy it new and get a 5 year mack warranty for $29.95 if I could do it over. Peace of mind for 5 years.

The info I've seen is all over the map on this. I know that some have reported shutter problems as early as 20,000 operations, but this is quite atypical, I think. The design life of the shutters on non-pro DSLRs is certainly less than that on the true pro cams (e.g. Canon 1D, 1Ds)but they should be expected to last at the very least 50,000 operations. If you're shooting 10,000 frames/year, that's 5 years, and I doubt you'll keep a body longer than that.

It has been years, but i recall an article about Nikon camera, film SLRs, and one reasoncertain midles sell for $2500 and not $300 is how long they last.
I agree that technology will encourage one to replace the camera before it wears out - IF one has the money, etc.
I can get a D30 for $350 or so...can i get a warranty on a used camera from a private person?
Warranties are almost always for manufacturer defect. Taking 100,000 pictures and then it fialing might be wearing it out, NOT a defect. Nikon's D70 keeps track of this, and oly Nikon (or their repair folk) can access it. Might not matter if the warranty is aftermarket, or perhaps it covers everything.

I think I got my Olympus in early 2001, or maybe even in 2000 ... I've only dropped it a couple of times, and although I have a tendency to click away with it, I don't think I put in 10,000 frames/year, so it's still performing useful service : )

From the D70, D100, 10D, S2 etc you can expect an average of 50.000 shutter operations. I believe that the 20D has a new shutter that should last a while longer. Canon 1 series, and Nikon D1/D2 series should do 100.000 to 200.000 shutter operations. But when you have your camera serviced once in a while (year) it could last a lot longer (Like 1.000.000 on a Nikon F5).
A shutter can be replaced. It costs something, but it costs less than a new camera.
This is especially important when buying secondhand. Some pro's dump their camera bodies after 100k shutter operations.
The S602 has an electronical shutter (hence the 1/10.000 shutterspeed), the CCD might wear out the first (the dye of the RGB filter fades).

Ya need to get out and use it more often then. Doesn't do anygood letting it sit on the shelf collecting dust. :) Just kiding.
My 20D at 1 1/2 years old has over 25,000 ... well ... really a lot more than that ... but who counts ;) |

I was thinking the same thing. I shoot about 1,000-1,500 per month |
