Geocaching is great fun and a great excuse to get outside.

My wife and I try to travel somewhere new once a year (or at least make our annual pilgramage to the Pacific Northwest). It is great fun to print out some caches before leaving and going to find them at the destination. They are everywhere. This is a great way to distribute and move travel bugs. We have moved bugs from Rhode Island, Oregon, Arizona, Puerto Rico, and Virginia...Hopefully we will get over to Europe again soon...

I started Geocaching back in May.
Lots of fun for the family.

Couple questions:

1) Does a GPS device require a subscription service in order to work? Or the purchase is pretty much all you need? Anything else?

2) I wonder if there are any services that provide beautiful scenics for visiting/enjoying/photographing/etc rather than "caches". Anyone know of such a GPS database? That would be interesting (I noticed some of the caches in my area are like "Bob's Garage", so I assume they're not all quite as equally beautiful and nature-filled as some that people have mentioned here).

Nope... there's nothing more that you'll need once you buy the receiver. There's no subscription of any kind whatsoever... just fire it up & away you go!

I can't say I've heard of a service similar to what you're asking in #2, although I can say that the geocaching.com site has led me to some very photogenic places.

I suspect that in the not-too-distant future it will be a lot more common for cameras to come equipped with GPS encoders that will mark the locations as part of the EXIF data (or something like that). Once that becomes common, and I can't imagine that it's too far off, I'm sure we'll be seeing more coordinates associated with scenic places.
