The Poway High School Varsity "A" Team:
While these may not be pro football players, they are superb athletes and what just may be the #1 High School Team in the State of California this year. (they just beat the #18th ranked team in the nation)
Poway Wrestling (Large static shots on the site aren't mine, but the rotating small ones are) There's a link on the page to where I post all their Tournament shots I do (for anyone interested).
Not always the easiest to shoot either, as they just won't sit still long enough at times (LOL) and the darned refs are always getting in my way. May recognize the last name of the first one in the second row...
These are resize of the shots I processed for their annual fund-raiser calendar and thought I would share.

You nailed that on the mark gibun.
Few realize how much these young men commit to this sport. It isn't a "thing" they do for a couple months. These guys stay in it year-round (off-season Freestyle) and train constantly. I know my son has been at it now for 6 years (as have many of his friends pictured) non-stop, and the dedication to their bodies, their diet, their excersize & still make time for their education is simply amazing.
It may be hard to imagine an extremely physically-fit young man coming off the mat after 6 minutes of wrestling and almost collapse - it's that demanding at times!!
Fun to remember back years ago when a few of them and my son came running back to the house one day after they thought they got busted over in the field with their spud launcher. We all went back and had even more fun!
My hat is off to them for their dedication and commitment.

I did this when I was young, there is simply now way to know pain and endurance as provided by keeping up with wrestling. LOL, now I only enjoy the memories of the pleasure of participating.... and endure the pain in the places I use to play ala Leonard Cohen.
If you don't mind, check out the ancient Korean sport called 'sirum', another one of the same family of sports but highly appreaciated in this country still. Having said that, times are changing here too and baseball and sokker and basketball.... well, are taking over.
post more of those lovely pics, I enjoy them sooooooooooooo much! |

I shoot wrestling from January through June... In addition to all the things about wrestlers stated above, I would like to add that they're smelly, sweaty, and do a lot of grunting. But they're still interesting. I was amazed the first time I ever saw a match - it's very simple and at the same time complex. It's almost primitive in the way it pits the wrestlers one on one and it's amazing to watch as they struggle to overcome each other. And of course I was open-mouthed at the idea of "blood time". And most of the parents are awesome. Even though they may have the highest percentage of lower-income families per sport, and be some of the most rough and competitive, they are absolutely the best people in the world to work with. :)

Just found out the team is ranked 11th Nationally:
National Rankings
Guess that makes it a cinche for a Championship at State.
