I just ordered the Canon 50mm 1.8 Mk II. The guy at the store told me that it is a fixed aperture lens (I know it's a prime lens before someone points that out, thanks). I found one source on the net that says it goes to f/22 //www.europepress.com/lenses/canon_lenses.htm . It doesn't make sense that it would be limited to f/1.8. I'm pretty confident that the guy is wrong (he also said the EF-S 18-55 would work on any EOS camera...I set him straight on that one). Is it correct to say that 50mm 1.8 Mk II goes from f/1.8 to f/22?

dont know if it goes to f/22 (maybe even higher), but you can use more than the f/1.8 aperature. You can stop down.

As I said, he didn't even seem to know that the EF-S lenses are not compatible with all EOS cameras.
