Let's say the subject I want as the main focus is standing about 100 feet in front of me. I switch the camera to manual focus. And using any lens (but let's say a 28-300mm for this question) if I fully zoom in and then set the focus and then fully zoom out and take the picture, will the subject still be in perfect focus fully zoomed out? and if so, does anyone else use this method to obtain better focus? I've been trying this and it seems to work ok... If this is the way it works and i'm not just crazy, it seems easier to focus on something zoomed in that you can see and then zoom out and compose your shot... Hope this makes sense...

This will depend a lot on the zoom lens, some have an nasty habbit of shifting the focus just a bit when changing the zoom.

If it seems to work with your lens then go for it.

It dies depend on whether the lens in question is "parfocal". The term refers to whether focus remains constant when the lens is zoomed. You need to check this out for each lens that you are using.
