It was recently my birthday and a relative gave me a Ritz Camera Gift Card, for $100. It's not much, but it can be used to finance a decent portion of a new lense or a handful of accessories.
I already have a camera bag, decent lower cost tripod, a Canon Digital Rebel with the Kit Lense and a Sigma 70-300 Telephoto Lense w/ Macro Feature.
What I would really like to get ahold of is a Canon 50mm f1.8 Lense, but that's not available through Ritz Camera.
Herein lies my predicament... I have some money that I can toss down to make up the difference from the $100 Gift Card to the cost of a few other lenses that interest me at Ritz Camera, which I could instead use to pick-up the 50mm Canon Lense.
Here's what I am looking at:
Buying this Lense:
Sigma 24-70mm 2.8E X DF
Or...
Canon 28mm F/2.8 EF Lens
The other thing I could do is pick up a remote shutter release, some photo paper, ink a few other doo-dads and then spend the extra money on that Canon 50mm Lense.
Anyway, I am wondering which direction any of you would take, in my situation.
Thanks for any suggestions! |

Eventually, I will get that lense. As of right now, money is a bit tight and there are other lenses that also interest me that I can still find great use for. I really can only justify a few hundred dollars right now, in six months, things will be definately different, but right now I need to be a little more careful with my spending.
Really it's a case of the Gift Card burning a hole in my pocket and I am itching to get something that will enable me to do some things that right now I am not quite able to do... |

I was more curious about you saying you couldn't get that lens from Ritz. It should be right at $100. That sounds like the perfect purchase.

They don't have it listed anywhere on their web-site.
I haven't started calling the stores just yet. I understand that they only carry a limited number of Canon Lenses. If I am correct, they carry the lenses with the highest profit margin on their shelves. It's like that in many retail establishments. Most lower priced, even if of High Quality and use, items are typically very low profit margin items. |

you should call the store and check. the ritz here near me has the 50/1.8 sitting on a shelf, i saw it the other day.
i would imagine they'd be able to get you any canon lens, even if it has to be ordered ... definitely check with the store. the 50/1.8 would be a great way to spend that 100 :)

I think you are wanting to buy the Canon 50mm f 1.8 Mark II. At $100 it would definitely be a high-profit-margin type item. It sells for $74.95 at Canon 50 1.8 at B&H. Perhaps cheaper elsewhere.

That would be nice second choice to shoot flowers and insects. For now, I really want to get my hands on the straight 50mm/1.8 Canon Lense.
Although I would really rather get my hands on a lense with a telephoto range somewhere between 17mm and 50mm with as close to f/1.8 as possible, which is most likely way outside of my price range. All I know is that I have seen some killer low-light shots with a 1.8 lense and I definately want to see if I can get close to those results. |

You would be surprised about the profit margin between a brick and mortar and a web-site shop. The Brick and mortar has salespeople, shelf space, inventory and building bills that all eat away at that profit margin.
So much, in fact, that they may end up making less on that lense selling it at $100 then the online store does selling it at $74.95 (Even without the shipping and 'handling' charge.) |
