Well, this won't be as good as I would like it to be, because when I took these Northern Lights photos I was in the middle of no-where, driving down a 2 track & had no tripod on me at the time.
Here is the original(completely untouched):
I balanced color levels, a little bit of brightness & contrast, and used Gaussian Blur to smudge out all the noiseyness. Here is the final product:
Would you have done anything different with this, or is the final version okay? |

Personally, I would crop out some of the bottom shadow area to emphasize the sky, adjust levels and curves and apply Neat Image to filter out some of the noise. Do you want us to have a play and post suggestions?
How "honest" do you want to keep the shot ? |

It doesn't matter, I was just trying to get some opinions of the final version.
You can be as honest as you want, personally, I think it looks horrible & I'm starting to wonder if it is at all salvageable. I'm not a Photoshop Guru so for right now, that's about all I can do with that image- until I start building my skills in that department. |

Sorry I missed that you were referring to the shot.
Well, considering how dull the original is, I think anything would be better than the first image. I really like the color modifications in the second image, so maybe a cross between the two. |

This is my attempt. Lost the detail in favour of colour...just my impression.
If you like it...please grab it with my compliments.
I'll leave it up whilst the thread is active.

I think you could do better than just using Gaussian blur to reduce the noise.
Try this:
After you adjust the colors/sharpness so that they are they way you want them, create a duplicate layer and apply GB to that until the noise is blurred away. Then change the blend mode of that layer to color. This removes the colored part of the noise but not any of the image's detail. |

Fibonacci,
That looks nice, thanks for taking the time to do that - it has it's own artistic look to it. It amazes me what people can do with images & knowledge, I can't wait to start learing more & I'm able to do my own modifications.
Spazmo99-
Thanks I will try that, I still haven't figured out how to do layers, but I'll definitely try messing with that sometime today. |
