Had a friend ask me to do a couple of impromptu portraits of her family for Christmas. Here are just a couple of them. The one by the tree is using my flash (HVL-1000 bounced) and the one by the fireplace is not using any flash. What do you think of them? Which do you like better and why?

I like these shots. I think the one with the flash looks clearer. Nice job and a very good looking family.

At this size it is pretty hard to judge. There seems to be artifacts in both but the second shot seems a tad bit noisy and/or oof in certain areas (wifes arm noticably).

I like the first as it seems a more natural pose, just a more comfy feel. Expression in both are great.

Just curious what are you using to attract the childrens attention? In both pics the adults are looking at the camera and the children looking off to your left.

I see what you mean! I had a toy in my left hand and my right hand on the shutter button. Next time I'll remember to hold the toy or whatever closer to the camera, or above it. We were trying to get this done pretty quickly. The kids were pretty cooperative, but starting to get tired.

I like the fireplace shot better, although the kids expression's are better in the tree shot (cut and paste...PS to the rescue!)

My issue with the tree shot is Mom's head - her hair disappears in the tree.

On the plus side, these shots are better than what i have recived from relatives with the family pic xmas card bit. Most of those (like 90%) are way underexposed.

Well, I added a few festive borders to some, cropped for 4x6 and 5x7 options for them and gave them all the files on cd. Ended up with 5 different poses I used for them. I also printed out one print of each. They are happy, so I told her "Merry Christmas". It does help the gift giving budget to be able to provide this kind of service, even though I'm not a pro!

Of the two, I like the first better. The contrast seems to be better and the colors are a little more saturated. The facial expressions also seem a little better in the first. Normally I would go with the less formal setting, but it this case the shot in front of the tree works better.
