Hey everyone. This Christmas, I am going to London for a week. I'm still working out travel plans and I know that many of you here are from that area. I'm staying in Knightsbridge and I would like to know the kinds of places I should go, and where to get good photos this time of year. If anyone can point me in the right direction, literally, it would be very helpful. Any suggestions on museums that allow photography, parks (I think I will be close to Hyde Park), or any other areas of interest, I'm open to ideas.
Thanks, Robert

A quick glance at the Landmarks challenge should give you a few ideas, since a number of London sights finished highly! Areas along the river are always worth checking out, including St Pauls & Tate Modern, Tower Bridge & Tower of London, Houses of Parliament & London Eye, and Canary Wharf. Green Park is good for trees (especially in the snow ;o), St James' Park has a good lake, and Hyde Park is just huge! Mind you, there are so many different places that you could go, so it might be worth first doing a tourist bus tour to get your bearings on the major sights.

Ive already made plans to go to the tate modern. Are there any photography events or museums or something? Do Saint Pauls and Westminster Abbey allow photography? I'm used to churches in NYC where you can just walk in and click away.

Don't know if you have left yet or not hope you get this. You cannot take pictures in Westminster and St. Pauls was having work done last time we were there so didn't go in. However, smaller churches will usually let you take pictures for a fee. The one we went to was 2pounds for a photo pass. There is a great cemetery called Bunhill Fields. The tube stop is Old Street and you can get directions from there, people are very nice, especially about their history.
The British Museum is wonderful for taking pictures also the Museum of Natural History.
If you are going to be there for a week, get a week tube pass (subway) don̢۪t be afraid of the subway its easy clean and safe (just a pain during rush-hour).
The parks are always pretty even in winter so you can̢۪t go wrong there.
Ask away, I go there regularly for work.

Lots of cemetaries - Highgate is probably the 'best' for photography, and most famous.
Here's a suggestion of a really good trip for photography, and for getting some slightly different views. Take the Docklands Light Railway from either Bank or Tower Gateway Station to Canary Wharf(the latter means you start from very close to the Tower and Tower Bridge) - but make sure you sit at the front; make sure to the extent that you let two or three trains go just to get one of those front seats - I promise you this is worth it. Hang out in Canary Wharf for a bit, which has some great opportunities - lots of water, lots of shiny buildings - then get back on the DLR and go to Island Gardens station. From there walk through the foot tunnel under the river to Greenwich (almost worth a whole day's trip in itself: the Naval Academy, the Observatory, the Prime Meridian, the market, the river, etc.). From Greenwich, get the river bus back into the centre of town - you can even go right back to Tower, or further on up to Westminster if you like. I take all my friends on this trip if it's there first time here, and cannot recommend it too highly.
The other thing I like to do myself, and that's especially effective at weekends when it's quiet, is go to somewhere like St Paul's station, and hust wander around the city aimlessly - there's some extraordinary building, little parks, alleys, scenes. You can't really get lost - it's actually a very small area, and you'll soon run into a tube station, and it's safe. Oh, and different. Really worthwhile.

Great Advice! I should have checked back sooner. Ive already got a tube pass ready to go. Is it worth the photopass even If im going to be in the cathedral itself for such a short amount of time?

The church we went in you could look around before you got permission to take pictures. I know you cannot take pictures at Westminster and I doubt you can at St. Pauls. So for any other church you visit you will just have to see if you want to take pics of it ya know. But GO to Westminster it is breathtaking. Camden Market is great for street scenes and Coveant Garden is always fun. The Armory at the Tower of London is very very cool. |

Sorry, a bit late for this thread but when in london go to greenwich park (south east london) or primrose hill (north london) and shoot the views of london. Its spectacular (especially at night)! Oh and shoot anywhere on the river between big ben and tower bridge (central london).
Enjoy! |
