back to the initial topic - i think if you make comments harsh such as "bad composition. 4" (which i'm not claiming anyone in this thread does, just an example), it is much less likely to get marked as helpful than "the branches in the foreground are slightly distracting, and you could've placed your subject slightly off-center for a more interesting composition". like my speech professor taught me: if you want people to actually listen, try to avoid involving their egos (okay, that's a loose connection, but i think it fits).
also, i think sometimes it seems like comments aren't being marked as helpful - but it could be that the person doesn't even really read their comments, or they were but stopped at some point before you left yours. (although there is the occasional one who will skip negative (even if constructive) comments)

Nope no timeline. I was just pointing out to louddog that, while you have made a few more comments than me, you've been participating in this site longer (member or not). No, it doesn't really mean anything.
Picking favorites isn't just some favor to the photographer. I often click the favorites of a photographer that I respect to see what he or she likes. Many of my own favorites came from browsing the faves of others. |

A few more, but less were helpful, she's been a member longer than I have, and I never suggested that I was trying to please the public. I do need to comment more, though. |
I was just kidding (thus the smiley face), trying to break the tension...
