I have been doing some work with models recently, mostly from onemodelplace.com, and want to produce images that will be useful for these volunteers. I have been doing shooting with these models because it allows me to practice and experiment with people who actually want to be photographed. The models do it to help build their portfolios, which is were I struggle a bit. I thought going through some fashion magazines might give me some insight into their market, but I have no idea which magazine to start with?
I know a key thing is getting the model's input is the type of portfolio they want to build, so I'll provide some thoughts based on the three models I have worked with. None of the models I have worked with are tall or slim enough to make it into the ultra competetive area of runway work. All three are tall enough to do Editorial and Fashion Print Advertising. All three have a midwest look, if that makes any sense.... not as exotic or refined as a New York look and not a southern california beach look. The best example that I have online now would be Katie.
While I welcome any comments on my work, my goal here is to get some advice on magazines that might help me understand the look that is required to help them build portfolios for the Editorial and Print Fashion Advertising market.

Vanity Fair.
Basically North America's most respected photographers. Fabulous work.
A big point to remember when studying high fashion photography is that these photographers are working with many of the world's top models, models who know how to move and how to get that 'look'. Makes a big difference :-) |

Thanks! I picked up an issue at lunch today and was very surprised by the quality of photography. I was even more surprised when I checked out the web site and reviewed some of the history of the magazine. Guess I should look past the name before assuming I know what a magazine is all about.
