I just made my first run through the challenge and there are some really good ones in there. There is one that really stands out and blew me away.:) Would have given it a 20 if I could have. :)

It seems more people are starting to substitute a score breakdown for a comment. I'd rather receive an informative comment than a score breakdown anyday. If a comment is useful you should be able to tell why the scorer likes or dislikes your entry. I also like knowing who gave me a comment so I can see what kind of photos they take and like. I have a learned a lot on here by reading comments, not necessarily on my photos, by photographers I respect. I encourage everybody to read comments made by your favorite photographers and those considered masters.

Good luck in broken everybody.

See my note below about why these scores appear in the comment. They are not meant as a replacement for comments.

So you prefer comments to scores? I could take everyone's argument here and use it to justify my request that the site change the challenges to be "comment only", and we stop rating them. The comment breakdown is no more than a more detailed rating.

As for the Appeal category, what does that mean?

Photos that are positive, optimistic or cute will score better in the appeal category on this site. It's sort of like the flipside of deviantart, where suicide-cool culture says that bathtub&blood photos will have a greater appeal (prompting this parody).

I've had two comments posted the same way, composition, technical, etc. I've also noticed one of the individuals has done the same to others and they all wind up with a (3) overall. hmmmmm! The other individual can't do math, gave an incorrect overall score. Maybe thats why he has a bag over his or her head!

Yeah - the break down voting is useful, but a problem arises when the entire comment consists of something like comp #, subject # challenge # and nothing else - a simple sentence explaining why those numbers were arrived at is incredibly useful, whereas the numbers alone (while definately better than no comment at all) aren't incredibly constructive.

I got one of those comments:
"Composition: 7, Technical: 6, Appeal: 6, Challenge: 5, Overall Score: 5 (weighted)"

I guess it presents a bit of a rationale for the vote but doesn't really help know how to improve it. My commenter, whose identity is hidden until the end of the challenge, also needs some math help. No Way can you average 7, 6, 6, and 5 and get a weighted average of 5 ... unless "Challenge" (whatever that is) is weighted so highly it over ranks all others combined. And then, it's just back to the same old voting biases with pseudo-math wrapped around it.

I'm not bummed about the vote. Commenters can vote however they want. But lets not try to wrap math around it if it isn't really an objective calculation. And lets do offer suggestions for how to take those numbers up a peg or two.

Maybe the commenter didn't mean "Overall score: 5 (weighted)" but instead meant "General Impression: 5" which I think could be fair.

I could see myself giving a 7 for composition, a 6 for technical work, a 6 for appeal and a 5 for meeting the challenge...then sitting back and saying "overall, this picture is still only worth a 5".

But that would be filed under 'general impression', not 'weighted average'...

It wasn't my vote, but I think you're seeing the high side of the new (third-party) voting system. When I tried it, I found that separating technical and meets the challenge, as well as aesthetics resulted in an average score higher than I would have voted on my simple 1-10 scale, subjectively, where photos start out at 5 and have to "earn" their way up or down. My guess is that the voter thinks the simple average is too high and so opted to "weight" it down to better mesh with the old system (e.g., perhaps he/she is not doing all the votes with the new system).

What is this new third party voting system? Aren't there a million voting systems...and aren't they all swiftly rejected as subjective so everyone just returns to their own system anyway?

I must have missed an announcement or thread or something...

Bringing this thread back to the broken challenge.

Oddly, my entry isn't doing too horribly bad. It's sitting in the mid-high fives when I was wholeheartedly expecting a 4 or worse. It's not so much that I don't like my entry, because I do; I find it visually appealing, or I wouldn't have taken it... but I didn't really like it much for the challenge. I wanted to do something emotionally moving, which I didn't because I, as usual, put it off until the last day and found myself out of time. I'm pleasantly surprised that people moderately approve of my taste for once, though :)

You must have missed the meeting. Everyone is supposed to add all my photos to their favorites, and give any photo that looks like mine a 10.

No seriously, I was talking about the tool to do multidimensional voting, as is discussed below and in the thread "Proposed Voting System". This tool is, of course, taking a bit of a beating because it's "third party" and the scores go in the comments, as opposed to the unidimensional score the built-in DPC system uses.

I don't know...but I got a couple of "it's not broken" comments. You wanna come and try to see if it works, you're more than welcome -- I GUARANTEE you it's broken!!!!!

My approach when viewing an entry for voting is as follows.

First I attempt to assess whether the entry is in the spirit of the challenge theme. Did they follow directions? Is there an obvious or implied connection? When I view the entry, I feel that the title has an important role to play. The title is there for a reason...it can steer the viewer into seeing a photograph from the intended perspective.

Photographs can be interpreted often from numerous perspectives. Sometimes a photograph really does, in fact, meet the specifics of a challenge theme, especially when the challenge theme asks to give an interpretation of a concept or theme, as in this current challenge, Broken. But it's not an obvious connection until it is viewed from a specific perspective. Perhaps the subject of the photo has a rich history which if not implied in the title, will easily be missed.

Some say that if the title is the only link to the theme, they will mark down. I say, if the title leads me to view the photo from a different perspective, and I can relate to the photographer's intentions, then I will give due credit. I fear at times photographers are unjustly marked down because some refuse to acknowledge a differing perspective. That's unfortunate.

Secondly, and thirdly, I view the photo on technical and artistic merits, and I sort in my head how it compares with the strength of the field, and try to score a nice bell curve giving the top 10% of the scores 7+ and the bottom 5% 4 and below.

Just my 2 cents.

How many of you noticed that when you hit the drop down box to vote on the challenges it says "broken wind." HMMMMM.. who is brave enough to comine the two challenges? :)

Phew... just finished 100% comments + votes. I had no idea how difficult it would be. My apologies if I offended anyone - I may have been a little harsh on a couple. Lots of great shots in there though.

I felt your comment on my photo was realistic and helpful.
Thank you
