I am still shuffleing back and forth on what tripod to get and what head. I am impatient and therefore poorer than I might like.
I like the capability of a Bogen 3021 with the center column that can be re-set for horizontal shots. I am also considering a JTL 6040 - it is some $46 cheaper which means i can get it NOW, and not wait another few weeks.( i need a head too...) It has a reversiable center column, but does not go as low overall.
Head wise, I kind of like the Bogen 488RC0, but while browsing for alternatives i found This JTL oneand this JTL one.. I looked at the cheaper Bogen ball heads, but i want a seperate pan lock.
Anyone familiar with JTL?
Any suggestions or thoughts on the tripod issue?
Any thoughts on either JTL head?
There is nowhere local I can look at any of this stuff, so I am buying blind, and likely not to buy again for years. I plan to get a D70 in 2005 sometime.

I'm not sure, but JTL may be the Adorama house brand.
At any rate, I would consider a less expensive Bogen Tripod, like the 3011Pro or the 3001Pro. Both will allow you to mount the center column sideways.
Similarly, I would stick with the Bogen heads unless you have the $$$ for either the Acratech or Arca Swiss ballhead (I don't either)

Still leaning toward a black Bogen 3021pro. Only $7 more than a silver one, and only $24 more than the 3001 in black. The cheapest choice is a silver 3001 pro for $111 (vs the high end of 146). The JTL head for $45 vs the bogen at $79 might be the compromise i need...now to go to work and get some money. Working for tips should be good during the holidays, but lately it just sucks.
Guess maybe i should try 'creative photography'...you know, hand out at the local seedy hotel and try being papparrazzi with the cheating husbands.

I just bought a used Bogen 3265 (GRIP ACTION BALL HEAD W/QUICK RELEASE PLATE)
It's very fast. When I was working on a recent challenge I did a lot of experimental studio shots. Shoot a few, check them out. With the quick release plate I could take the camera to the computer then just snap it back in and it would still be aligned right (a solid Bogen 3221 tripod).
Also adjusting the camera angles with the trigger type grip was super fast also.
I am very please.
