Now I know a lot of people buy these for shooting macros. However, If I take my 50mm 1.8 and slap a 35mm extension tube in there, will it be similar to the 85mm 1.8 at all for shooting non macros? Does the sharpness start degrading rapidly? Do you lose F stops? I was thinking of using it mainly for headshots. Probably better to wait for the 85mm money to roll around but that could be months. Just wondering how these things worked.

The extension doesn't make the lens act like a longer focal length, it just makes it so the lens can focus very closely. You also lose infinity focus. With 35mm of extension on a 50mm lens, you probably would not be able to focus beyond a foot or so.

You will also lose some light - I'm not sure how much. I saw a formula for it in a book once, but I'm not sure where that book got too. With f/1.8 you should not have too much trouble, however. When I put tubes on my zoom at 200mm f/5.6 I notice.

Edit: Found this page that has more information. For your case, it looks like you will be losing about 2/3 of a stop.
