Anyone have any downsides to using GoDaddy for web hosting? Their $3.95/month hosting deal sounds great -- just want to be sure there are no "gotchas" before I sign on...

I use them for URL registration, and I have to say, while I like the price and the general tool, I find their adware based, sell-you, sell-you approach a downsidde. I don't know if they found a way to carry that over to their hosting.

What control panel do they use? What does it offer in terms of preinstalled scripts (I personally like CPanelX, and combined with Fantastico, it gives you a quick and easy way to get PHP software installed).

You might also consider SolidInternet. Very cheap, nice control panel, fantastico, etc. Performance is fine. Amount of space is great. Price is cheap. If you don't need and aren't expecting support, I recommend it.

They don't put ads on their hosting clients' sites, do they? If so, that would shoot it down for me right there. I haven't seen anything that says they do this...?

All I need is a simple FTP site for a simple web site. They have PHP, which is really the only thing I'll need... and I could actually live without that.

I use the $3.95 plan by GoDaddy. It is great. I don't get any of the adware stuff that nshapiro talks about. I've never noticed and downtimes, the site seems quick. I give them a thumbs up.

I have 9 domain names and 1 website there, and NO complaints at all. They've been great, no downtime, no ads. Great value.

I recently swithced to them for URL registration and forwarding - I can say that everytihg is great, and they are CHEAP. I was with DomainDirect (part of tucows i think) and they are very good also, but lots mo money - I got 5 years of registration at GoDaddy vs 1 at Domaindirect. All I lost was the email capability (blahblah@mydomin.com) but no loss there as i didn't use it.

I get no ads. The actual site files are on my broddband provider as I get 25 Mb or some such per user, and 7 users for my $44 a month.

If you have an old PC lying about you can use it to host a site via XP, Win98, Me and linux. I have used the XP and 98 methods. Works fine. Probably have a limit on bandwidth capacity, but then bandwidth does cost money. You could have very secure data that way though - but then you might be more open to hacking. I had my web server behind my firwall, and a linksys firewall router is now under $50, so you could run your server form behind it's own firewall. A friend of mine is running multiple routers for this purpose.

Well, good good good... thanks for the comments! I just hit the Big Button to make the purchase, so I'm now an official GoDaddy customer.

I've toyed with that before a bit, but Verizon DSL doesn't give me a static IP, and I found that it's still a bit slower than I'd prefer. If just a couple people were on the site at once, I'm sure it would be painfully slow (more so if I'm trying to do something). So I'll pay the $3 a month :)

When i did it, and my friend, we use no-ip.com - they have a client that will poll for the IP address and update the referrer when it changes.

you can always mix and match things - many places charge a lot for secure server or other specific features - you can have them or very easily updated files on your home PC/server - easy to update or in my firnd's case, it is database driven and the pages are written on the fly as opposed to a static HTML page. My pages are static.

I didn't mean ads on your website, that would be really low class.

I meant ads/shovelware on any control panel forms or management forms to manage your website.

I don't know that they do that, but they DO DO it (yes, like doo doo) when you register a new URL.

Do you want to add this... or this.. or this.. or this... to your order...

Right.

Welp, I won't be using 99% of those tools anyway, so they can fire away :)

I do appreciate the heads-up, nonetheless...

I was a bit annoyed at the ad this ad this ad this bit, but it is a way of selling add ons, and well, that is how the world goes round. If it keeps the name registration cheap for me, i'm OK with it.

I have 4 domain names registered with GoDaddy but no hosting plan there.
I can tell you that their customer service is wonderful and I am very happy there.

My host is //www.1dollarhostingonly.com
I don't think that they are the best or the cheapest, but they do have a Unlimited web-space plan. And for that I am willing to pay!
Their current prices are around 55$/year, which is about 4.5$/mo.
When I first registered the price was 45$/year, and I think that I could get this price for any new account if you'd like me to try.
They also support any (or almost any) foreign domains in addition to the common com, net, org, biz etc.
The downsides are:
1. No PHP. For the unix their plan offers only 30MB of space.
They do however support ASP.
2. They give you a FTP account. No editors for any web content. (For me this was an up-side issue but I hear a lot of complaints about this from others...)
3. their customer service is GREAT! but quite slow in their responses.

Other then that I definately recommend them.

Edit: typos... what else...

I only use unix servers--they work best (oh oh, I see an argument coming on...)

Anyway, if you want linux and php support, e.g., to run any of a multitude of nice open source software including content management systems, check out solidinternet.com. Actually, I just looked back at the prices, and it's actually much cheaper than GoDaddy.

(No relation to them other than a customer.)

I purchased the url from GoDaddy and have had no problems. I am using this for hosting total choice hosting
They have SQL support and unlimited ftp/subdomains/emails. also you can have multiple ftp users with limited and defined access. ( not sure if that's a normal practice)

I used to use GoDaddy for domain registration, and that is where you find the ads and sell, sell, sell approach that nshapiro mentions. I got tired of it and have since switched to DomainSite. I love their service for domain registration, I've got about 20 names there for $7.77 / year. I've also heard nothing but good about StartLogic for hosting.

I know your question was answered and you've signed up for service, but I thought I would throw in my .02 :-)
