since I work in a photo store with lots of cameras, I've arranged to borrow a camera for a day of two during this weekend. i'll probably use it to shoot a challenge entry. question is - does anyone think its 'cheating' to do this? i don't want my first ribbon to have an * beside it... ;-)

and while i'm at it..

i can borrow:

nikon 8800
canon pro 1
pentax IST DS
canon rebel

which would you take?

I hope not since I'm manager for a camera store. :)

I'd play around a bit with the Nikon 8800 for starters. The incamera features are pretty cool.

I don't get why you think that'd be cheating? That being said, no, it's not cheating. If you set up a shot and take the photo yourself, no one really cares what or who's camera you used.

Good luck!

(I'm not familiar with any of those models except the rebel so I can't really say what's better).

it's like having an unfair advantage for a day or two .. hehe... then again, most people on the site have $500+ cameras anyway, so i guess it doesnt matter.

Go for it!

I'd say it all depends on what lenses they allow you to play with. If it's only mid-level lenses then I would go for the Pro 1. If it's L quality (or equivalent) then the Rebel and *ist are the way to go.

There's nothing unfair about having a decent camera, even if it's just for one day :-) There's always someone with better gear, so don't worry about it. The more important question is WHAT are you going to shoot? YOu're shooting for the "wind" challenge?

Take the Pentax *ist Ds! I want to buy it, and would love to see some photos from it by someone on here.

maybe wind, but for sure broken. broken wind challenge would be a little different.

i played around with the pentax, not so great at low ISO but i was very impressed with its performance at 800 and 1600.

The Pentax and Rebel are DSLR's, the choice should be obvious. And the "L" lens in the Pro1 isn't L quality, it has CA like you'd expect from a 7x zoom.

I would like to own the pentax, but if you only have it for a few days I bet the pro 1 still takes a hell of a good shot/

My fiance' won a ribbon and she didn't even own a camera. She had borrowed mine. Looking back, after talking her thru different photoshop possibilities (she's a complete beginner) - I remember saying to her, "Don't let it bother you if you only get a score in the high 4, low 5 area". LOL! I didn't think the submission was very strong. Goes to show you what I know :)

ps ... She just bought the Canon A95 ... I love it. Very cool little camera.
