If you wanted to go to 400mm and you had to pick between the Nikon 70-200 AF-S VR f2.8 with a teleconverter and the Nikon 80-400 VR. Which one would you choose? Lets say they are both around $1000.00 - $1100 used. What if you hade to buy brand new, which one would you choose?
I shoot landscapes mainly on a tripod but I would also like the freedom of walking around. I like to shoot at amusement parks...a lot of city scapes, sky and nature. I would also like to get started in astrophotography.
I have narrowed it down to these two lenses but I am torn between the two. Being that I am investing a lot cash in the lens I want to make sure that I make a sound decision. |

The 70-200 + converter is of course no faster than the 80-400 at 400mm (both f/5.6). IMO, the 80-400 will likely be much sharper than the combination of the 70-200 and converter, unless you stop down, and then the combination is not very useful (always shooting within a two-stop range of f/8-f/16).
I tried this with the Canon 70-200 and the Canon 2.0x II converter and was not happy with the results.
