Here is our Xmas photo for this year. My youngest burst into tears immediately after this photo, because he felt his mom had not given him his "bribe" soon enough. Luckily it was a good one. Oh yeah, BTW. It was only the 3rd photo of the shoot! LOL! Took him about 10 minutes to calm down after his "episode".
We took many individual shots after. Much easier to get one kid smiling and happy compared to three!
Shot using 1 100 w/s monolight(right) with 1 gold reflector (left). Added a 150w tungsten over the top to light the hair a little. 20D with 17-40 f/4.
I'm rather inexperienced, but do get to take some portraits occasionally. I'd love to know what people think of the portrait, especially the lighting.
Thanks in advance.

Looks like you have an 'browned eyed family', nice shot and like the frame.
I'm no expert here what so ever, but my two bits since you asked and then it's off for my 4 hour sleep before work :-(
Only thing I've noticed that is distracting for me are the shadows on the left side of the photo. Shoulder of the middle boy and especially the cheek of the left side boy, I think the cheek shadow is the most distracting thing in this photo. As you mentioned 'single monolight' but that second light might have done wonders on the shadows.
Still, trust me that's a great shot and way better then I could have done. Just need to bump this forum in the morning for some better comments.
Hmmmm, if I get some bribes I will vote this a 12 ;-) |

I think the lighting is great.
On Sunday I tried a similar thing with my 2 boys. 4 & 6. I took about 100 photos, and don't have one where bothare looking normal and or smiling. Grrr.. It was frustrating, but we had fun though. I didn't use the bribe trick. Will have to think of that next year. |

Thanks guys. Glad to see some people are up in the middle of the night.
Taking shots of 3 kids is not small feat. We used to take hundreds of shots and hope that one was decent. Then we discovered the bribe and the entertainement tricks. Last year, my wife stood just beside be and tossed popcorn up in the air and caught it in her mouth. The kids were in awe. So we ended up with this great shot of the kids staring at their mother (off camera). They were not looking at me, but that was fine. They looked like little angels. It was great.
This year we tried the bribe. Everytime we took a shot, one kid would get a "rocket", left over from the Halloween candy, if they gave a nice smile. NOte to self: ALWAYS GIVE THE YOUNGEST THE FIRST BRIBE.
AS for the lighting, I realized later one that my one light was placed a little too high and created shadows under the eyes. This shot has already been taken. NOted for next time. I specifically wanted only one light, to create some depth using the shadows. I agree that the shadow on the face is a little darker than I wanted.
Any other comments are more than welcome.
