There are several photos that seem to clearly have been converted to B&W and then one part of the picture painted Yellow. Isn't this against the Basic Rules, no spot editing?

Usually there is a thread by now running that comments on such things but I haven't seen it and now I'm starting to vote... Thanks.

There are ways to selectively desaturate that are within the challenge rules. Check out this tutorial.

Ok, wow. Is there a way to know if they did it illegally, whether it was on purpose or not? Or the bigger question is, should I really worry about because people smarter than me will normally find them without my help?

Thanks...

Part of my entry and a few others i saw) have b&w parts in an almost all yellow pic - I got mine by playing in channels with the hue/sat on all non-yellow channels. just playing around, and when part of it went to alost b&w, i was done.

Selcetive is the better way to go if that is what you want to do, but cannot be done withing hte basic rules, so work arounds have been found.

I think it can sometimes be difficult to really determine whether or not it was done illegally. Sometimes there are obvious clues, like the yellow flower has color but the school bus is black and white. I think most selectively desaturated photos in an open challenge are recommended for DQ at least once. If you find one and aren't sure, feel free to recommend it and we'll check it out.

Also remember to vote as if the image is legal and let the SC worry about checking. As I have used this process previously :)
