How about a 'do not let anonymous commenters comment on my entries' option box. If you don't have the cahonies to put your name down, don't make the comment in the first place -- it's more an annoyance than anything.

It'll only be anonymus for a week. |

I know that we all see it differently. But does it really matter who the comment is from? I thought that we all wanted comments, not comments from people we can trace and form an opinion about.

It does make a difference to some -- I can't believe that some people actually want their identities hidden while commenting. As absurd as it sounds to you, that sounds just as absurd to me.
It doesn't matter who the comment is from, but I'm never going to check "this comment was found useful" from anyone who is anonymous and more than likely I'm just going to skip it over because it annoys me.

I believe the reason for it to be put in to place was that people were getting not so nice PMs from some people who did not like some comments they were getting. Some people are critical in what they have to say and some people don't like it. Some people get all sweet and nice comments and they don't like it. I think the system just allows the people who don't want PMs about comments to be sure that they won't. |

Well, they'll just a get those PM's a few days later. So what? Much more fun, if you get a snippy reply to a comment, to be able to go back and lower your vote ... :-)
What gets me is that I am, I think, more likely to be highly critical of any given shot than anyone else here - I should say well over 90% of my comments are critical, and I never get these objectionable PMs. why do I get to miss out on all the fun?

Good point. I think you are good at choosing the images you comment on :D |

It does to me, but not because I respect any one person's opinion over another. As I have learned the personalities and specialties of many in the DPC family, I might take some extra satisfaction in knowing that I moved someone I "know." Who wouldn't love to have their portrait praised by Librodo or a receive lighting tip from Jmsetzler? |

I can't believe some people don't have the cojones to put a photo, as well as their geographic location in their profile, (and in many cases, don't even use their own names.)
The thing here is; it's all about choices, and not everyone's choices are going to be the same as your own. I agree with both Koriyama and xion.
Relax, you'll know soon enough who they are! ; ) |

I think it may have more to do with people not wanting to know who's picture they are commenting on: They make a comment, photog pm's them during the challenge, and the whole anonimity thing is wiped out. We're not supposed to know who's pictures they are, even if you've already voted and commented.
Plus, say you have a grudge against someone, oh I don't know, lets say...um...maybe you have a grudge against...say...BradP. You are sick of seeing him win all the challenges (Sorry Brad, had to use someone). If you give his photo a 10, and give a great comment, and BradP pm's you thanking you for the comment. You may say, "What! That was BradP's picture! Screw him I'm changing it to a 4!!"
After the challenge is over, their identities appear. So it has nothing to do with "cahonies," or the "not so nice pm's". People can still send a not so nice pm after the challenge if they want. But by then maybe they will have calmed down.

The concern is about the PM violating anonymity, not the snippiness of the comment.
Also, voting someone down for a snippy reply is against the site rules. PM'ing a commenter, while discouraged, technically isn't.
This new feature gives those who who do not wish to receive PM's during voting a way to guarantee they do not receive them. Anonymity is preserved for those who feel it is important.

Another thing I just thought of -- when you read someone's comment, sometimes you wonder why they feel a certain way or want to look further into it, so you click on them and bring up their profile -- then you see what that person likes -- their individual style of photography. When you're hidden, no one's going to do that until after the challenge is over if they do it at all. By that point, the comment probably lost its 'newness' and the person who received the comment lost interest in your comment.
Just saying that if you want people to view your work and get to know you better, sometimes what makes them click on your profile is right when you left a comment.

I like the anonymous comment option. I would always honor a request not to be PMed; I just don't know who it bothers.
I feel more comfortable sending a PM for an especially astute comment, or if someone "gets" what I am trying to communitcate when the user name is available for me to see. If it is anonymous, then I don't have to worry about upsetting someone who doesn't want to hear from me regarding a comment that he or she left.
I am realistic about my marginal abilities. I only want to contact someone for advice, information etc... if that person wants to be contacted. I am sure some people just want to participate in the challenges and be left alone. I can respect that as a personal choice. |

So I get this comment from a "hidden commenter"...
"This has to be the most tenuous connection to the challenge yet."
This is the only comment this person left...
Funny to me...absolutely!
Of any value to make a better image....NONE!
Kinda glad this person is "hidden" during the challenge!
Thanks SC!

Maybe the photo page could be modified so that the photographer can respond (in the thread, not by PM) while the voting is still going on. Then that comment would be revealed after the voting, just like all the other comments made during the voting.
That way, the response will be made while still fresh, and the ability to quote a comment will help eliminate any "hit-and-edit-later" nastiness, if there were to be any ... |

For me, it was ALL about getting PMs (even nice ones) from challenge participants after I had left comments. I just didn't like the breaking of the anonymity (the act of cluing me in to the owner of the picture that I was still technically voting on). The new option to keep my identity hidden during the challenge relieves me of ever having to be contacted during a challenge again. I love it. |

If you really want constructive comments, ones that will help you improve your photography, what difference does it make who it comes from? What difference does it make if you know who they are immediately, or after voting? To say someone doesn't have the cahonies because they are an anonymous commenter is a classless cheap shot, and it undermines the value of the change the admins just made. To say that is disrespectful to all who choose to help improve the integrity of the challenges by choosing to be anonymous during voting; as well as to the Site Council and admins who put a lot of effort into the recent changes. Such remarks serve only to reinforce my belief that all commenters should be anonymous during voting.
