Seems like it would be very helpful if you could rate the challenge entries in just a few separate categories: Composition, Lighting, Challenge interpretation. This would be in addition to the overall voting and would be optional. The idea is that if I am voting on a challenge entry and I don't think the image meets the challenge, I would never give it higher than a 4 or 5. Another example is if I think the image & title are perfect for the challenge, but the photo sucks. However I would like to rate these photos on their other characteristics. This way the photographer can get a better, more specific idea of what they are doing right or wrong without people having to leave comments. I am more inclined to click a few extra numbers rather than leave comments.

The scores for the category voting would not be counted in the challenge, but could still be tallied and used in the photographers portfolio and profile statistics. I would implement it with an option for voters to see / not see the category ratings - they would have to turn the feature on for the category rating choices to show up.

Not surprisingly, this has been discussed before -- with mixed feelings.

I'll see if I can find the thread I am thinking of that discussed it at length, but in the meantime, what does this accomplish that leaving a comment doesn't accomplish better?

David

/edit: found the thread I was thinking of, "Proposed voting method"

I don't dislike this idea, but the biggest problem I see is on challenges where there are four or five hundred entries, a lot of people may be more disinklined to vote at all.

It would be nice, as if I have a picture not doing very well, it gives me a better insight into what is putting people off, particularly if there aren't a lot of comments.

Thanks David - I meant to say that I did a couple different searches for this idea in the forums but after sifting through many lengthy threads and getting sidetracked on several of them, I just decided to post it.

So I spent about an HOUR reading through that post and it is exactly what I was suggesting. Looks like the thread died in May (??!)

I'll post to that thread...
