So I'm look into getting an affordable, compact f/2.8 lens for indoor portraits/candids to hold me over until I can afford the expensinve stuff. I've been looking around and have found some good deals on this lens:
Tamron SP AF28-105MM F/2.8 LD
Does anybody have any experience using this lens? Feedack? Worth $500?
I'm considering this over the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di lens, because of the extra reach.
If you have this lens, I'd be interested in seeing some examples from it.
Thanks!

The 28-75 is better quality-wise than the 28-105

The tamron is a great lens, however i find that if you use filters much the 82mm threads can be a headache. Although the 500 f8 uses the same size threads you will find most of Nikon's glass uses 52,62 or 77mm attachment size (the 18-70 "kit lens" is an exception at 67 urgh).
If the 2.8 you seek is for DOF control or available light, one lens you really should take a serious look at is the 85mm f1.8D (about $300). It has really nice bokeh, is fast, 62mm threads, and due to rear-focus it focuses extremely fast.
Good luck with your quest.

The tamron is no where close to being a "compact" lens. It is a tank.

Thanks for the comments/feedback so far. The lens is mainly going to be used for indoor wedding photography. I've read the 28-75mm is a great lens, however I wanted that extra reach, as I have the Nikkor 18-70mm DX(not 2.8).
With the 28-75mm Di, do you still have the crop factor, or is it like the Nikon DX lens that are made specifically for digital?

I currently have the canon 28-105 3.5-4.5(great lens for the money).
I am now looking for a 2.8 lens in a similar range.
Does anyone know if the Tamron 28-75 is considerably sharper than the one I have?
I shoot weddings and want the the 2.8 but also really need a sharp lens that focuses in low light easily.
I can't swing the price tag on the Canon 2.8 though.

Both of my local camera shops highly recommend the 28-75, saying that it is a great lens for the money, produces nice sharp images, and I do know that the crop factor is still an issue for the 10D, (but I don't know anything about Nikons, sorry.) |

I would also consider nikon VR 24-120G. The same price (or less), and i realize it's not 2.8 that you mentioned, but: 1. it's a great all around lens; 2. at the tele end i very much like it; 3. I would pick nikon over tamron any minute.
Just another option, i do realize it may not be what you are looking for at all.
Or, as a second option, if you need it just for portraits, i would also consider one of the nikon's primes. It would be less expensive too...
Such as 60/2.8, which i absolutely love, it may be too wide for your liking though, then check out the 85 and 105. |

Thanks, but it has to be a 2.8, as I need it for low light. My preference would be a Nikkor lens, but I don't have the money to invest right now. I also have a 50mm f/1.8 prime. I need a zoom, as I will be doing candids, so a fixed focal length would not work real well.
Boy, when I started this thread I was pretty set on the 28-105, but now people have got me considering the 28-75 Di. Time to find some more reviews.

Thanks to everyone that posted. I've did a lot of reading after all the Tamron 28-75mm XR Di recommendations and have decided to purchase that lens instead. Looks like I'll be getting it before the end of the year since there is currently a $30 rebate.
I've also re-educated myself on the Nikon DX lenses. For some unknown reason I believed you did not have the 1.5x crop factor with the DX lenses. I publicly announce I a friggin' idiot! :)
Thanks again to everyone...you made me make a more intelligent decision.
