Hi everyone. My first post to this forum.
I just recently purchased the Olympus c725z on the strength of its zoom and tweakability. I'm just an interested party trying to take good photographs really but wanted to update my previous low res cameras. I sweated over getting the Olympus as there was also a Fuji Finepix s3500 for the same price. I decided to go with a bigger zoom, more options and the name.
What is your opinion of these consumer Olympus zoom cameras?
It's definitely not a good indoor shooter thus far but does produce acceptable outdoor results.

Steve

Steve I don̢۪t know much about the c725z but I did have a C700UZ and it took great pictures. I loved having manual controls [didn̢۪t have manual focus though] but it had a lot of features. I think you will be impressed with the Olympus C series cameras, especially if it has versatility.
PS. The only thing I did not like was the high noise level in low light and I had them to replace my first one because of hot pixels. Other than that, great camera.

Thanks Scott. I went out yesterday and took a whole load of test photos. Some in broad daylight, some at full zoom, and plenty of indoor snaps. The indoor snaps were better the more the place was lit by natural light through windows, but there is still a degree of noise and fuzz in the final pictures. The outdoor shots were generally really good and the colour saturation was quite accurate and clear even under darkening cloudy skies.
I will admit that I don't know a lot about the other more advanced features but have been playing with the shutter speed with mixed results. I did break out a tripod today and took lots of pictures of fruit at macro with AF lock on to try and get a clear focus. The final results were mixed, some affected by indoor light and some affected by the white balance settings I chose to experiment with.
I am quite confused by it all !

Overall those are enjoyable cameras (I have a 750), but there are still problems: high noise on higher ISO settings, unusable display at night, manual focus not precise enough...

I guess none of them are perfect. Even when I was reading reviews, some were glowing and some were harsh. I knew I wanted more than a point and click, and since my father already had a Fuji Finepix and I wasn't keen on its feel in my hands, I decided to go with the metal body of the c725uz. Still testing it as I go obviously.
But then, it could never be worse than my old Kodak DC3200. The first real cam I ever got and paid handsomely for. The number of batteries it chew through were ridiculous. Still, despite it's limitations I managed to get some pretty decent shots out of it before I put it on the shelf. And that was even worse indoors !!!! You either had too much noise and speckle or the flash just blanched everything out....no in between.
The Olympus has been a noisy indoor camera so far, despite my tweaking. But I have grappled with it a bit more since. Though, it can be a tad embarrassing when my brother's simple point and click Samsung can outdo my nice metal finish Olympus in terms of indoor noise...ever so slightly !
