This is an indoor thing in Pgh, not sure they'd let us in to take pics though...

Without knowing what their membership looks liks/consists of perhaps we don't want to.

I guess we'll go with naked birds then. LOL

haha that place is awesome. Who wants to go join?

EDIT: in the rules section...

#
No Cam Cell Phones and NO Camera's. If seen, found, or if we think you have one, you will be asked to leave.

damn :-D

EDIT 2

On second thought -- I shouldn't go. Apparently it's illegal to be checking out the women -- that's pretty lame. I bet no hot chicks go there anyway -- probably just old married hags.

heh. I just ran to the store...it's not even snowing now, it's 'freezing raining'. The weather channel said that for every 2 inches of snow, it translates to .01 inches of freezing rain. I have the feeling we're going to get jipped out of a major snow storm.
01/22/2005 09:37:37 AM · #106
Here in Beaver it is snowing - i just let the dog out - seems to be 1/2 inch maybe. this is just the beginning though. Just got up so haven't seen the news to see what Ohio got etc. Last night they predicted for me up north here 7 to 9 or 8 to 10...i want it. i don't want to go to work today! (I was off yesterday and am off mon and tues...working tonight would screw up my 4 day weekend! And since i work in a restaurant for tips, heavy snow might have in impact on my income!)

heh we're at like 2" outside now (that's in addition to what was already there). My Jeep does fine out there on the roads, but I noticed the roads that are treated are actually much more slippery than those that aren't treated.

My jeep as mudders on it..i have not been on a snowy road but the only thing worse than mudders on a Jeep in the snow is a RWD sports car in the snow.

Not snowing here..got about 1/2 inch. what a let down.
i knew buying a new snowblower on thursday would stop the snow!

HAha, I went in to the lab this morning at 9am, my car was clran when I got there (it was freezing rain) when I left to come home at 10:45a or so I had to clean about 2" of snow off my car!

this city needs to learn how to plow roads.

HAHAHAHAHA.

I think I'd be concerned about becoming a "human tripod," if you know what I mean, if we went to this place.

Welp, just got back from taking my daughter to swimming lessons, and now we're going to try to find somewhere to eat lunch. I don't know how many people have this illness, but when it snows like this, I LOVE to go out & drive in it! :)

heh...mud tires are great for the snow. It's the ice they have problems on.

Here's my old ones (33x12.5 TrXus M/T) --

And here's my new ones (245/75/16 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Not a true 'mud' tire, more of a rock tire) --

Oh...that was taken about an hour ago.

my lowered SCCA racing (circa 1998) ford probe is surprisingly good in the snow, as long as it doesn't get too deep. it has been known to get stuck easily. (it likes to teter-totter on large snowpiles) Of course, the streets of pittsburgh have not been good to my poor car and its glory days are long gone! (Its got 185,000 miles on it, but can still easily go 140)

My 96 caravan sucks in the snow. very little go, and absolutely no stop. teh ABS is too sensative or something. My 93 taurus is a tank. Didn't get teh Jeep moving at all. Seems the mud tire bit may not be all that bad, but the ice issue could be. been sitting outside for 2 weeks...9 degrees now, and well, no need to crank it and kill the battery. it'll go back to the garage later this week. (it is a summer 'car')

and my tires

might i suggest for indoor necessity: the mattress factory on the na'side. great big photographable arty bits in an cool groovy setting.

(not free tho, deapee, it don't recall the price but it's worth it!!)

have a great time anyway; after almost two years since i left the 'burgh, i still miss it!

regards,

I don't think that you are allowed to photograph at the Matress factory. (or if you are I think it is limited to their permanent exhibitions, not the traveling ones, can't find any info about it on the web)

I'm in 100% on saturday. Even if its outside (which sounds like a bad idea, given the unpredictable nature of the weather lately) Plus, I'm a pussy and don't like the cold. (despite growing up in Wisconsin and cleveland, both of which have at least an order of magnitude more snow then the burgh!)

I was at the nat history museum last weekend, and I don't kow how much they tolerate photography. there are only certain exhibits where it is allowed, and a clan of 7 or 8 guys would probably be frowned upon.

There is always Phipps (although, I personally have shot the hell out of the place, usually too crowded to make careful compositions)

argh, I should be more positive and less negative.

be not negative.

from the mattress factory

perhaps i committed a museum faux pas. there didn't seem to be any restrictions.

either way i hope you guys have a great time.

You guys already know that I'm still in.

Hey Brian, welcome to the Pgh DPCers. What a small world it is. One of my roommates, Kevin, is in the Pitt Grad Chem program too!

In other news, my Xterra lost her virginity yesterday. Went offroading for the first time. We were looking for some offroading place called "Quaker" (my brother has been there but couldn't remember the directions), but got lost in Greene County. We found a "No Winter Maintenance" trail that was really fun. Then wrapped up the day at the Houston Playground (where you can really f*#@ up your stock vehicle if your not careful). I'll post some pics soon.

I definitely think we should organize an offraoding/camping/photo trip in the summer too.

heh...last time I was at the playground, there were trees everywhere from the floods.

I love that hillclimb on the right as soon as you get to the top -- this one guy in a stock grand cherokee couldn't make it up, so he went back about 20 feet and floored it up the hill. I guess he didn't know about that dropoff as soon as you get to the top hahaha -- he got stuck and ALMOST flopped it.

You know that big 'gulley' or ravine or whatever right in the middle -- my one buddy climbed up the steepest part of that, no lie. He has a grand cherokee, 9" lift, 35's, lockers f/r and a 318 to deliver the power.

I have some pics lying around somewhere from when we went there. In actuality, there's just not enough to keep things interesting.

--

On another note -- I don't know if I'm down with the aviary or phipps. I'll go if hans rosemond wants to take me to his studio to practice a thing or two on his models :-D

Do you need an extra hand by the way, Hans? Seriously.
01/27/2005 01:43:13 AM · #121
You mean that large/deep gulley that is 'punch bowl' shaped and looks like a rock quarry? Someone actually went down into that and back up!?!?!

There were no trees laying around, everything was snow covered. I had a really close encounter too, good thing my windows were down. I was driving on a straight away and heard the distinct sound of ice cracking (much unlike snow crunching beneath the tires), and floored it. I guess I ran over a frozen mud pit b/c I went back, stompped with my foot, and was in knee deep mud/slush. That would have been really really bad. I've seen pics of tires getting sliced up bad by going through icy mud pits.

Ok, here are the photos!

The first half is the Houston Playground. The second half (after the sign) is the No Winter Maintenance Forest Service Trail. There's also two videos at the end from the trail.

lol...yeah, we all go down there through the part on the left, then climb the rocks and leave through about the 11:00 position. When he did it though, he left at about the 1:00 position.

lykofos: Whose group does kevin work in?

I really like the shot of the exterra and the sunset. with a little work, that could be a brochure cover for it. (I'd clone out the track marks in front of the tires. they kinda look like "I tried to go up, but I didn't have the balls to make it up there so I drifted back down" Lots of 4x4 people in here eh? That's cool... never had anything I could leave the pavement with myself.

So what's on for saturday? Forecast says 37 and cloudy.

Aviary is $6 and free parking. Not too crowded, no photogrpahy restrictions that i know of.
I am not opposed to outside..what was the temp at station square? Sat is supposed to be 37 and mostly cloudy. not too bad. Downtown is always windy though.
