I'm a big PSP fan, and have been using it since I started doing digital processing on photos.. (or just simple resizing like in my younger days.. last year.. heh). However, a local store is marking PS Elements down to $99 cdn pretty soon, and I'm wondering if it would be worth spending the money on for my new system, and what the learning curve would be like from PSP7?
Any thoughts?

I have PSP8, but rarely use it. PS Elements does everything I really need, and PSP performance is rather sluggish on my PC when processing large files. I upgraded to PS Elements 3 mostly for the upgrade to PS Album which is now part of Elements. |

I have both and PSP will do things that you can't do in Elements, but even so I almost always use Elements. Most likely this is so because I started with Elements.
For me also Elements is one of the only programs that will handle the raw files from the Sony F828 well and that is a huge plus for me. |

You can always use Gimp 2.0, 2.2 soon to be released, for FREE.

I've used PSP 6, then 7, 8 and now 9. Though I've never used PS, I think the major difference between the two concerning photo-editing is that PSP offers more automated enhancements processes, which are useful for beginners. I don't see how PS could have anything very important without Jasc adding it to PSP, too.

I would hold off on buying Elements if you already have PSP and a fan of it. Simply because Elements comes free with certain purchases.
Buy a Wacom Graphire and get Elements
Buy a Wacom Intuos or Canon Rebel and get Elements 2
Buy a Canon 20D and get Elements 3
Not absolutely sure how long these offers will continue, but check into them. |

My 20D came with Elements 2 but that's ok, I use MS Digital Image Suite 10. |

If you already have and love PSP, stay with it- but get PSP9 if you haven't already (actually 9.01 is out). Really nice program for the money (or any money). Noise reduction is pretty darn good, and the cromatic aberation remover is... well, there's nothing else like it on the market.
However, that being said, I also have PE3. Wow! Major upgrade over 2.0. There's a lot of things that it can do easier and faster, and to those that say that they've just "got" to have masks and curves- I added them with Paul Shipley's free addons. The bottom line for me is that (for photos) both are very good and very powerfull once you get into them, so I'm no help. I can't decide myself which one I like the most, so I use both! |

I was always a Ulead PhotoImpact 7 user until I tried PS Elements. There is no comparision. PS Elements is vastly superior. I used them side by side for about three months until I learned some of the ins & outs of PS Elements. I would say that I only use a fraction of the PS Elements power, but it much better than the Ulead product. And I got it for about US$50.
For the minor investment (compared to the cost of a digital camera or even a large memory card), I would say go for it. The benefit in post-processing has a big upside potential. |
