Never would feel like it was going out of the way if I said I would. I asked that is all I did. I wouldn't want anyone feel obligated or put out to get it done. That takes the fun out of it.

You're hired if you don't feel it's too much trouble. Though if I had the chance to see a Manatee in person I would drive for hours! They are so cool!
Thanks for volunteering!

One Manatee coing right up. When you ge the picture make sure you post it here so I can see it too!
I can't say I can honestly think of another animal that is steeped in so much mystery or is so trusting of mankind when approached. It is so sad to see them scarred by boaters....):

I was responding to umbris, since you already have the snake but you can be put down as an alternate for M, okay?

Deannda,
Do we have a deadline yet?
And, what size image are you looking for?
Also, switch me from leopard to lion.
Took this one today:

Wonderful shot! Seems to have a bit of chroma/color noise you might want to try and fix. |

As I told Deannda, I'm not sure what results I will get becuase they are not easy to photograph in the wild. It may look something like this one that I shot at the same location last year.
I'm hoping to get permission from the park biologist at Blue Springs State Park to take some shot from the bank near where the manatees congregate. If not, I will have to try it from the boardwalk which is not good because of the angle. If it doesn't turn out, maybe we can use another "M" animal.

I guess the M is covered from all sides. As a backup I will have the Meerkat in any case for you to decide about.
Also, maybe you should decide on the resolution and size so we can start getting the pictures and then if any letter is still missing we'll see who can get what. Don't you think?

Ijust found out that manatees are not likely to be at Blue Springs this time of year because of the water temperature. So, I am going to trek across the state to Homosassa Springs and hopefully get a good shot there.
Wish me Luck!

I got you down for Lion, but for specific details like size needed, I would recommend sending a PM to Deannda and ask her the specifics needed.

Hi everyone! Zap has been doing such a good job over here that I forget to check in!
Thanks to everyone who has offered to help, this is going to be great! As for size I'm looking at a minimun size of 4" X 6" and at a 300 DPI. If you are not sure how to accomplish this, please post here and we can offer directions.
Also, I feel that everyone should have a say in what pictures are used so once you have shots you would like to start using you can send them to me and I will start some new files either on PBase or Webshots so others can access them and offer any ideas or suggestions on how to improve them or if they like and agree it's good for the poster. I offer the off site to post because not everyone is a member and can post their shot on DPC. When you send me the copy you are thinking of using, please make it with the same restrictions that are here on DPC. Max size is 640 pixels and try not to be much over 150 kb.
I was also thinking of setting up a discussion board on Yahoo so we don't tie up the message list here on DPC.
Thank you again everyone for helping with this!
Deannda

Well, I got some manatee shots but the conditions were poor for photographing an already difficult subject. Here are four candidates, non of which I'm really happy with so I am asking for your help in deciding if any of these are acceptable for the project. Please rest assured that I will not be the slightest bit offended if the answer is none. I've added my own comments also.
Thanks for your honest critique.
1. OOF, Severe loss of detail.
2. Bad angle, light.
3. Bad angle, light.
4. I can photoshop out the reflection and debris in this one.

I think any one of those would be usuable with a little PS work. Now is the time to bring in some experts to help!
Our first project people, pick a shot and see what you can do with it! Please list the steps you take to get to your end product.

I really liked the first picture! I think it's great despite the soft focus. I also think it is the most clear as for what a Manatee is.
I applied some auto contrast, shadow/highlights of 30% and a britness of 20 with contrast of 10 to lighten up dark areas a bit.
I also burned a little bit the hot spots under the arm and on the face.
I think you should play around a bit with the original version and you'll get a great picture of a Manatee.
(In any case I will get my meerkat picture as a backup ;-) I will probably get it sometimes during the coming week)

Now I know why I am here..to learn more..and take the brusies that go along with that learning.
(:
But I am learning..My past challenge entries ...were like..how do you say with out using an experlative? The first one I entered actually finished last inthe over all voting. The second challenge I enterd...gues what!..I finshed 2nd in overall place..The third ..well you got it..it came in third to last place in the overall ratings..This time..I have two entries in..landmarks and yellow revisited..I am still thinking about the new wind one..Well it seem my average score has improved along with the voter to viewer ratio..perhaps I'll take 4th & 5th to the last this time around..but the average score is at least 1-2 ponts higher. That is a chearful thought!
(:

Hey everyone!
Okay, you have the specs, min. 4" x 6" ratio with a 300 DPI, this was talked about in one of the other projects. If you are still unsure how this attained, you can check this out:
Inch to Pixel Ratio Chart
What is DPI?
These should get you started on what you are looking for.
Once you have the picture you want, then you can send it to me and I will upload it to a specific Folder for the other people to look at and offer suggestions or ideas on how to improve it if needed.
Right now there is no time limit on this, I personally don't plan on doing a lot until after the holidays, with 3 kids and a ton of Ebay stuff to list I think this would be a good time to look through the stuff I already have and decide if I'm going to use one of them or go for a reshoot. I suggest we take the next three weeks to think about what we want to do, if we are going to reshoot, or which picture we are going to enter if we already have one. IF you already have one you want to use please send it to me by Jan. 5, 2005 and I will upload them for the others in check. If you don't have a specific shot in mind yet, we will give you until the February 5, 2005 to get the shot you want and submit it to me.
Please make the pictures the same size as you would for DPC, no more than 640 pixels on any one side and try to stay as close to 150 kb so it will be easier for those who have dial up. Keep the original on your computer until it is approved by the group. At that time I will ask for the original with a signed release and store them on my system (will be backing up constantly!) and once all the shot are submitted I will start the process of putting them together. If you want or need more time to get your shots, let me know asap and we will extend the deadline. I want a good quality poster and the way to achieve that is lots of patience and understanding. Okay?
If you have any other questions, please post them here or email them to me and I will answer as quickly as I can.
Thanks everyone!
Deannda
