in Win XP I know I can set up different users or the same machine, and have different access to different programs or restrict users from programs and such.

Can I set up profiles to run different hardware/software configuations?

reason I ask is I have a imageing device for my telescope (Meade LPI imager) and I have gotten it to work. It is a USB device, but once I shut it down and plug my mouse back in I can not get the program to work to run the imager with out having to reinstall the software AGAIN!!!

Its a pretty good example of bad programing on the manufactures part, but thats another issue we wont discus here. Im just looking for ideas so i can use my toys.

well your idea wont work, but it sure opened my eyes. My laptop has a PS2 port I can hook my mouse up to with a USB to PS2 connector , this should fix my problem. Thanks for rattling my brain around a bit.

Man sometimes things are solved so easily we overlook them the first 10 times.

The problem is the software used to control the imaging device uses the USB port and if you have any other USB device connected before or after or at the same time as the camera it freaks out and forgets what to do, so to avoid problems you cant use a USB device on your PC after you install the software for the camera.

Many people have complained about this to the manufacturer, for months and months, but no real answer on a fix and or update to the program. Many of these people having problems only have USB ports on their laptops and no PS2 port, well I have a PS2 port and im gonna give that a try

ps.. did i mention i feel like a tootal goob now, this ranks up there with "why my printer wont print", test printer, clean printer, do a test page, reinstall drivers, do some more testing, change ink tank, hey it works now....arrrgghhhh

Does this work?

To create a hardware profile
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing this procedure.

Open System in Control Panel.
On the Hardware tab, click Hardware Profiles.
Under Available hardware profiles, click Profile 1 (Current), and then click Copy.
Type a name for the new hardware profile, and then click OK.
You can customize your new profile by enabling or disabling devices for that profile in Device Manager. For more information about Device Manager, click Related Topics.
Notes

To open System, click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
The profile named Profile 1 (Current) provides a model for you to create new hardware profiles. It will not appear in the list of available hardware profiles shown during startup.
