....to the challenge topic, THAT is my question.

We seem to have two distinct camps here on DPC.

Group A thinks that missing the challenge topic deserves a deduction of points, but the thing that REALLY counts is the quality and creativity of the photo.

Group B thinks that this particular site is different to all the others that just show beautiful photos without topic restraints.
DPC is all about challenges and the restrictions that come with this. It makes it more difficult, but surely that is the beauty of it - having to s t r e t c h !!!
To the B group, even the best photo (technique etc) can't be a winner if it missed the topic.

I am curious about the ratio on here...... which camp do YOU belong to?

I think there is even another camp or factor - just how literal and exact it has to meet the challenge.

You appear to have your A's and B's confused.

In addition, quality and creativity belong to those you put in Group B as well--they really count. It's the schema of the site--you buy into it, or you don't. As has been said many times before, it's what makes DPC, DPC.

Just my point of view ...

Stick to the challenge theme and don't fight the problem. Why?

The least important reason is that you'll get hammered for deviating from the theme and more so if you try to sneak it in with a title.

The most important reason is that sticking to the challenge theme stretches each of us out of our comfort zone. When we are stretched, we learn new and improved skills. Some of the themes are specifically chosen to teach a technique (e.g macro, B&W, and so on). So roll with it and learn.

I suppose there is an in-between reason, too. If you are, or aspire to be, a professional photographer, you will need to stick to your clients' wishes. The client's theme might be their wedding, but if you turn in a series featuring the dogs in attendance, you won't develop much of a business. Sure, the dogs may have attended the wedding, but photographing them won't replace the traditional shots of vows, cake, reception and such. And no clever title will make the bride happy.

So ... in the end, my counsel would be to stick to the challenge, learn, and score better.

Label me if you wish, but the challenge theme is the assignment given to the participants -- if the image produced does not 'meet the challenge', the photographer has failed that assignment. No, it does not matter how spectacular and pleasing to look at the failure is -- it is still a failure.

That said, I feel a lot of what gets stuck in the challenge description belongs in the special rules section -- or not mentioned at all.

Shoot something as an assignment for a magazine, etc. they ask for a duck and you shoot a chicken. Do you get paid or asked to shoot again?
Thats answers what group I am in.

If it were only that easy! If the challenge was "Shoot a duck" ha ha, we would have one group voting all rubber ducks 1's and another group voting all mallard's 1's and another group voting.......how many different ducks are there anyway?

Another point you seem to be missing is that for both camps - yes even the liberal A voters - the deduction of points which occurs by missing the challenge means the photo can't be a winner.

I don't automatically vote a photo that misses the challenge a 1,2 or 3 like some - I adopt the point deduction approach, so if the photo is really fantastic but I didn't get the connection it will generally get a 6 or a 7 from me (partially this is an allowance for the fact that some people will interpret a challenge in different ways to me, and I don't think we should be overly restrictive). But even by that measure an off topic photo won't be a winner.

And while I see myself as more liberal than some in this sense - the magazine metaphor provides a very persuasive argument for the B camp.
