I use 2 alienbees b800s and one b400. I wouldn't change them for anything. I love that they're fully adjustable and how you can attach grids, umbrellas, softboxes, gels, etc to them. I'm not familiar with the sb800 nikon flash so I can't really compare.. I can just tell you how much I love using my alienbees equipment.
an example.. |

yes, that cute baby pic is done with 2 ab b800s and 2 reflective umbrellas. I dont see the need for the b1600s.. I hardly ever use my b800s on full power so I dont feel the need for the 1600s. |

Yeah you should get great results with a large softbox and an ab800.

I think the AB remote limits the sync speed or something weird like that... I would read the specs carefully if I were you. I know there was some reason I didn't go with their wireless unit. Otherwise, their stuff is great! I have 3 and just love 'em :-)

studio strobes are more powerful than flashheads, and you can attached softboxes, grids, etc. they're very different from a regular camera flash head.

We have two AlienBees B800 units at the office. There is no comparison between these and an external camera-mounted flash. None. |
