i think this about sums it up.

This has more to do with coloquial understanding of a 'landmark' than a literal one. As people have said, a landmark is something by which people can refer to, or identify a place by. Coloquially this reference would normally be a prominent man made or natural feature.

I'll vote high anything that fits that criteria without being shoe-horned - and I agree with dacrazyn:

To me it means something that you would use in possibly giving directions, etc.
"Go down to the [insert landmark here] and take a right."

I also agree that a landmark does not have to be familiar to anyone at all. After all, it's that very purpose of mentioning it to a traveller who needs to find their way!

I'd say that Alcatraz is a place.

Without a doubt, the top 10 will be instantly recognizable. Things that are known locally to be landmarks won't fare well. Simple as that. Call it the average voter mentality, if you will. Not meaning to insult anyone, I just think we all have a little of this in us. Human nature, pure and simple. (OK enough clichés for today)

I hope to prove you wrong. The name is DP challenge so I guess I'll take this one up! I'd be thrilled with a top ten finish, but my landmark won't be known by people outside of my area. Still, you'll know it's a landmark.

For the record, I wasn't far off, now was I?
