I remember seeing Neil deGrasse Tyson at a local forum event in which he discussed the amazing Isaac Newton. To keep this short apparently Newton was very religious and very superstitious and when he found six colors on the spectrum he thought it was bad luck, so he added a 7th, indigo, which did not really need to be there because it doesn't exist. I mean you can go one lighter or one darker shade on the spectrum of blue or purple and call it indigo but in reality there are six light spectrum features. |

The electromagnetic spectrum is continuous, and color divisions are arbitrary human conventions, and not the same in all cultures -- the Greeks did not have a word for "blue" despite having the same (though less-polluted) sky as we do today.
Perhaps next time we should define the challenge of a range of wavelengths in nanometers. |
